For a new job assuming the salary is about the same when adjusted for cost of living:
Memphis,TN Birmingham, AL or Charlotte, NC

Do you have family or are you single?
And never Memphis.

Depends. Do you have family/friends that you see regularly? If they're close to you (assuming LA) then I'd probably go Birmingham over Charlotte. Lots of yuppies in both areas now. Not sure about the charlotte suburbs but the bham suburbs aren't bad. I spent two weeks working in Gastonia just outside of charlotte and it was kind of depressing but seemed like a nice clean little town.
Wouldn't even consider Memphis
Basically, what is some shite you enjoy doing outside of work?

Man, you should have stayed in Shelby or King's Mountain.

Charlotte is starting to resemble the Yankee towns that their populations fled from.
I'd go Birmingham over Charlotte.
Also you couldn't pay me enough to move to Memphis.

Charlotte has an NFL team and is closer to the mountains.
Birmingham is developing a unique personality and is an up and coming city. Great food. Closer to the beach and SEC football.
I don't know about Charlotte but Birmingham really only has three or four areas that are worth raising a family in. Pretty expensive to do so.

Charlotte - Boring town, but I highly suspect a decent place to live. Enough stuff to do, solid economy. Close to cool stuff.
Birmingham - I think Birmingham is usually underrated, and is probably a better cultural city than Charlotte. But just way more economic might in Charlotte and better surrounding areas.
I would not consider Memphis.
