If funding wasn't an issue, do you think the moon would be colonized? Would we have sent a man to Mars by now? I read an interesting article about sending a manned mission to the atmosphere of Venus and it piqued my interest,

I might be able to finally dunk a 10ft goal.

I've often wondered if a nuclear weapon detonated on a gas giant would kick it off to a star.

Perhaps we would know.

The US would have a bunch of angry voters wondering why so much money was spent on projects that didn't produce much beyond "Gee whiz".

If not Houston, Obama would have moved NASA to the south side of Chicago.

Most certainly, and probably have a hundred or so people living there as well. It is simply embarrassing for us as a species that's it's been nearly 50 years since we landed on the Moon, yet we still don't have a colony there.

Possibly. I'm pretty confident we would have orbited Mars and probably stepped foot on Phobos, but Mars is a very difficult journey. Launching and landing is very precarious to where we'd at least try landing about half a dozen times on the surface and then launching back.

I'd say it would still be in the 2020s before we'd land there, but it could have been sooner due to NASA accelerating the growth of technology even further than in our present timeline. We'll never know.

I still think that would be a good ways off in either timeline. Venus has just about the same gravity as Earth. Also hanging out in Venus' clouds would seem to be more of a novelty project compared to going to Mars, Jupiter, and Saturn.

What would NASA be the abbreviation for if barry moved it to Chicargo? No Astronauts Since Armstrong?

Jupiter is regularly hit with objects that have hundreds of times more destruction and firepower than an A-Bomb.

I remember writing a paper for a class in the 1990's that criticized us for spending money on space curiosity when we could spend more on cancer research instead. I got an A, but because I'm a cynical a-hole, I thought, "I bet the cure for cancer is out there and we'll never find it because of my stupid paper."

The voters have never gotten very angry about other federal projects that spent a lot more money and returned even less, at least not angry enough to do anything about it.

Not that much scientific value in it. That's why we send rovers instead.
