I just moved to the Lafayette area to start a new job. I'll be renting while i'm looking for a home to purchase. What are some areas I should be looking into? Important factors are daycare, commute to North Laf/Carencro, and we obviously don't want to be in a high crime area. I like the Youngsville and Broussard areas.

Really don't want to go as far south as Abbeville or New Iberia (I hear they have weird haircuts down there) What are some other areas/suburbs/small towns to consider? TIA

If you've gotta get to Carencro daily then you don't want to live in Broussard or Youngsvle.

You got it.
If you have to hit the thruway in the morning, than Broussard is a better bet. Try to be east of Ambassador really. Youngsville isn't that bad either for traffic once you figure out what roads to avoid when.

Unless you just enjoy a punishing drive on the thruway everyday.

No way I would commute to Carencro from Broussard. They are building some nice subdivisions around the sunset area.

It's not that bad. Depends on what time but I drive it everyday before 7 and around 4:30 and it's not bad. I can think of about 25 different roads that are WAY worse at that time

Agreed. Youngsville got a shite ton of water last month though so be careful what you decide on. May have a reputable contractor or they may be someone throwing it back together to ditch it. My co-workers in Broussard made out dry but hwy 90 and several roads around them are often impassable when you get a heavy rain.

Is there like an automatic bot somewhere that starts a where to live in Lafayette thread once a month?

They have some good subdivisions popping up in the Carencro area.

I moved back to this area about a year ago after growing up near here. I was gone for almost 20 years.

I can say, without a doubt, I regret it. Main reason? Lafayette Parish leadership. It is a joke. I am already looking to move.

I took the same approach you did, but then after seeing all the traffic in Youngsville and Broussard, I decided on Carencro. HUGE MISTAKE. HUGE. I put my house up for sale a couple weeks ago. I will be moving out of this area, just don't know where. I also don't want to get into my personal situation dealing with local/parish government, but I am not alone.

You are better off avoiding anything in Lafayette parish. You can't trust the areas in Broussard and Youngsville now due to flooding. Just be careful there when choosing, if you go that route. If I could do it again, I'd probably move further North and West and just commute.....just as long as I'm not in Lafayette parish.

Good luck! The people here are great, and the downtown area of Lafayette is growing. Fun stuff to do, for sure. Just don't put you or your family in a situation where you will rely on local leadership for anything. You will be sorely disappointed and completely screwed. It is typical SLA politics.

I would suggest staying away from Youngsville unless you plan on living in Suger Mill Pond (Only area that I know that didn't flood on a large scale). That area is going to see a big spike in insurance premiums over the next couple of years along with Flood Insurance Requirements. I would suggest Broussard which had very little to no flooding. Use the link below to look at the area of interest to determine if you want to live there and take a chance.
