When did sporting apparel stores become so regional?

Is everything at Dick's, Champ's, Academy, Foot Locker, etc. nothing but Saints, Pelicans, and LSU?
Stores used to stock Notre Dame, Florida St, Miami, Chicago Bulls, Dallas Cowboys apparel just to name a few. Even Macy's and Dillard's only have LSU and Saints gear.
Is this a recent retail trend?

Yes. Thank the internet. Why would a store like dicks have all colleges when they are losing money doing it? My baseball team is the Astros. I don't go to lids,academy, or dicks to get astros apparel anymore. I order it off a website.
