When did it become funny to be sarcastically patriotic?

I see guys with huge American flags on their clothing, red, white and blue bandanas, ect. They are trying to be funny but I don't think this great nation should be the butt of the joke.

Hipsters like soccer and the USMNT. Dressing up like Uncle Sam and screaming "frick YOU MEXICAN POORS" is totally normal behavior for them during a big friendly or tournament.
Of course, these same people are aghast that you'd consider voting GOP or eating at such a shitlord institution as Chickfila, but I'm just telling you about the hypocrisy, I can't explain it.

Personally I'm not about wearing clothes with the American flag, it's actually disrespectful to use it as a garment of clothing. But it seems like one of those rules nobody cares about so it's not really frowned upon.

I've begun to notice this in advertising more than anything else.

I believe the rule is against using an actual flag as clothing, not against having clothing made to look like the flag.
