The plantation really shouldn't offend anyone but the slaves outside the plantation is kind of a dumb move for sure.

I get my feelings hurt from others complaining about their feelings being hurt

It is wrong and racist to marginalize or suppress a culture. Unless of course it is white culture

so the black people who work at the plantation and give tours voluntarily, are slaves?
how do you figure that?
because they are black?
The period dress is not a good look, bro.

So now Oak Alley is racist for employing women of color as tour guides? WTF.
Are you assuming their gender?

EVERYONE at Oak Alley dresses in period costume. If they had the black women dressed as Aunt Jemima then I could see some backlash but they are wearing the same dresses as the white women. What would be really racist would be if the white employees got to dress up and the black employees had to wear jeans and t-shirts.

But having a plantation be a representation of "Southern Charm" is a bad look. It's such a cliché look and without proper context it seems like we glorify them or something
So we aren't allowed to have our architecture celebrated because slavery happened

Well, we kinda do, but there's nothing wrong with it.

You really want to stake a claim to chattel slavery as being "white culture"?

That's wonderful. This is a completely reasonable viewpoint that is dripping with nuance. Now, how can you convey this to people with short attention spans, average to below average IQs, in the context of a scenic backdrop on Wheel of Fortune?

Nothing about that picture represents slavery

Yeah, nothing at all about black women in 19th century period dress walking around a plantation home represents slavery. Come on, bro. Don't be daft.

I don't think there was anything to assume, you could win one of them if you spun the wheel right.

Are they celebrating architecture or did they just throw a plantation in there to represent "southern charm"?
The architecture is inseparable from slavery and it sure isn't "our" architecture considering it was only the slaveowners built them and lived in them. If you have or want to have some personal connection to the plantations then go ahead. Don't lump all of the south into one big bunch by glorifying plantations as some great representation of "southern charm"
Posted on 6/20/17 at 10:32 am to JS87
Those aren't slaves, those are southern Mammies.

Correct me if I'm wrong here, but those ladies are wearing that on their own free will... if they're ok with it, who gives a damn about what other people think

nope, just pointing out how stupid that argument is.
