I saw a house for sale recently on Pratt Dr. that really caught my eye. No nothing about that neighborhood though. Is that considered Gentilly?

Yeah, same one I saw. Wondered why the price would be about double if it were on the other side of city park.

I think the boundaries of Gentilly vary widely depending on if you want to be included or not.

If you drive through both Lakeview and Gentilly, you will see a significant difference in the general upkeep.

I have a relative that lives in Gentilly near Holy Cross. I stay with her sometimes and don't feel unsafe, but you can tell there are a lot of sketchy people sprinkled in the general area. I don't think I would live there.

re: What's wrong with Gentilly?
My grandmother lived at the corner of Gardena and Perlita in oak park for over 50 years. After Katrina and 8' of water the whole area just up and left. Crazy how one day you live next to your neighbors for 30 to 40 years, watch their and your kids grow up and the next day the area vanishes never to be the same again. I have really good memories of that area, walking to mass at Cabrini on Sunday morning, getting a Red velvet cake at Lawrence's, and going with my brother to play at oak park.

If you log onto Nola.com you always read something along the lines of "Cecil Washington was shot in the face in the Gentilly neighborhood. When police arrived, he was pronounced dead at the scene". Gentilly is sketchy as frick.

This was the area I was wondering about. I guess north west gentilly, I don't know all the separate neighborhoods/sections.

Pre Katrina the area was getting sketchy. Now it is even worse.

re: What's wrong with Gentilly?
Gentilly was a great place till the early mid 80s

Then it was just the bachus lounge, slicky's and the cue....

Gentilly was one of the last vestiges of the real new orleans....

Some areas are worse than others.

Places to live:
-Gentilly Terrace
-The Holy Cross/Pratt area
-The bird streets above Robert E Lee and west of Bayou St John are technically Gentilly

Places to avoid:
-Anything between London Ave Canal and Elysian Fields
-Anything between Gentilly Blvd and 610
-Anything west of Franklin Ave

Good times on lafaye st back in the day...

Gentilly is awesome IMO. Bike paths all over and it's very easygoing. Businesses are starting to come but it's taking time. We need a legit watering hole though

ETA: Who owns that huge plantation house on Mirabeau right by the London Canal?

Gentilly is one of those places where you may not be robbed and/or murdered, but you could be.

Same thing can be said for the French Quarter, Uptown, and Mid-City

Used to be the Flick family. Not sure if they still own it.

Don't go past paris, especially dont go past the london avenue canal that is where most of the bad stuff happens.

Between harrison and robert e lee is ok.
