The weight of the sheet trumps everything.
I have a set of 1000 thread count Egyptian cotton sheets that are 5 years old and look new.
My wife bought a set of 2000 thread count sheets recently, they are thinner and the weave isn't as tight.
First set was an eBay special, can't find another set like them.

Well it depends. I bought some 300 thread from Walmart and they were great and lasted for over two years. I also bought an infinite thread set that was a little softer but didn't last as long.

This is the answer. Thread count is a horrible property to based a sheet purchase on. Try to find a place that has samples of the material to feel. Do you want a sheet that is super soft? one that is durable? one that doesn't look super wrinkled? One that keeps you cool or warm? Etc.
