What year model would be your cutoff for a 4-Runner?

Forget price and miles--assume they are fair. If you were in the market for a used 4-Runner how far back would you go style-wise? What year models made the biggest strides? I'm not talkin '97 or '17 either. Something between an '02 and a '12 let's say.

idk but I think the 2000-ish look was the best look on the 4Runner.

This exact topic has been on my mind as well. We have one SUV and one car. The SUV is newer (my 2012 got crushed) and the car is a 2003. I've been considering an old 4Runner to replace the car as I don't really care about cars nor care for putting out 20Gs on one. I figure an old 4Runner may fit the bill for an older car with reliability I can trust.
Give the wife the new SUV and I'll roll along in my old 4Runner. Driving a car is just not going to work for me. I can barely get in and out of the damn thing.

Still driving a 97 manual with no problems. It's actually increasing in value over the last few years 
Look online and try and find some 3rd gens in good condition with a manual transmission, they are hard to find because people snatched them up so fast and people driving them aren't selling them.
Just stay away from 2nd gen with the V6 3.0... The 4 cyl 22REs are legendary

Well 2002 was the last year of the Gen 3. So if you're going to include it, you should go back to at least 1999 based off exterior changes and features. But as far as power train and interior, you could take it all the way back to 1996.
The Gen 3 IMO is "the" 4Runner. It has a solid engine, tank like reliability, and looks that still hold up today as far as I'm concerned. There are so many examples of them lasting 300k+ miles that it is a safe buy. Plus, the TRD supercharger that was available for them make them a blast to drive if you're into that kind of thing.
I always wanted a Thundercloud Metallic or Stellar Blue Pearl 2001-2002 model.
But I did own a '96 SR5 that I put the supercharger on and drive to almost 200k miles with basically no issues.

my only complaint would be that the 3.0L was a fricking slug, bulletproof yes but 0-60 in 19.4
if i would've dropped the 3.4L into that body style

had a buddy that treated his like absolute shite and that thing easily made it to 200k.

Im a big fan of 2004+. 2003 had to much plastic for me. I just sold my 2004 with 180k miles on it and bought another 2004 with 49k miles on it in pristine condition. Some wife of a guy who owned an oil business and she basically never drove it. Love 4Runners.

Any third gen.
Unit for 5k. 2k into suspension and tune up.
Tires and wheels for 1200.
Into it for under 8k.
My wife's daily is an 01 4runner sr5, leather, coil overs, 32s.

I have a '98 that i've had for 14 years. 180K miles. Just general maintenance. Still runs great. Wife wants me to get rid of it because we don't use that much. I just can't pull the trigger. Probably keep it until it dies.

Get a dry erase board and do a wife vs 4Runner pros vs cons table. "Accidentally" leave it out for her to see. She'll tighten up if you are the breadwinner

Take a look at the 03-07 4runners. They're bullet proof!
The ones with the v6 are the best because they have a timing chain instead of a belt.
My sister has a 06 with 380k, only basic maintenance done on it. Sumbitch runs like new.
