Would we still be dependent on whale oil? What are some other energy sources we could have harvested?

I would have a BA steam powered machine.

The world has plenty of water to fuel things

Needs a heat source to boil the water to make steam.

The last coal powered Car, made in France during ww2.

This is at a car museum in Nashville.

quote:

During the German occupation of France in World War II, gasoline was scarce, expensive, and often unavailable. Several companies offered systems for a vehicle to be powered by alternative fuels such as wood, coal, or charcoal. This car has been converted by Fap Elgazo Tarbes to run on coal. Adaptions were necessary to alter the vehicle from gas power to coal burner. The two large cylindrical containers under the front fenders are filled with coal and ignited. In about 30 minutes, enough methane gas would rise out the tops of the containers to feed the special carburetor, making the car run. Using the coal system reduced horsepower by one-third which reduced the top speed to about 45 mph (depending on how well the coal was burning). Range was about 30 miles before you had to stop and add more coal. Only a few of these conversions survive.

I could get by with this, and oil it with beef lard.

Did you just watch that whale movie with Chris Hemsworth? Bc it's nuts all the work they went through just to get oil from a whales head. Surprising anyone even ever thought about getting oil from a whales head

I have a feeling 100 years from now people will be amazed we used fossil fuels as energy.

Without fossil fuels something else would've been developed I guess. I dunno. Wood isn't sufficient for big steam engines and other than fossil fuels I don't know what is.

But everything before Tesla--the industrial revolution--came about Bc of the steam engine. That was the start to mass production, shipping, etc. Which really needed coal. So without coal, what would've happened to the industrial revolution? I dunno.
