My kids car from college. Engine is shot. Do people part these out or just send it straight to the crusher?

You can donate it and get a decent tax credit.

Junkyards will give you a minimal amount of money for it. Won't be much though.

mileage, condition, options?

you could probably sell it to a gear head that wants to use it for off roading if it has 4x4.

Obvious Troll Post. Woulda been more believable if you said it was a "13 Grand Cherokee"

Everyone on the OT knows that Chryslers don't last that long...

You can find rebuilt motors online. Somebody who knows what they're doing can drop it in over a weekend. Cheaper than a new vehicle. Just make sure your kid checks his oil every time he gasses up from here on out or that one won't last either.

The body is in pretty good shape for a 13yo car.

ETA: Misread your post. Exactly what you said.

Yeah, it's a good rule of thumb for older vehicles. While the gas is pumping, check the fluids. Easy to do.

Rebuild the block into a 4.6L

2wd or 4wd? If 4wd you can part the axles, transfer case, tranny, and maybe a few bills for the block.

Giving this one heavy consideration.

That vs buying a new vehicle.... even older used stuff is $3500 at minimum for anything decent for a student IMO.

Oh, and it's 2WD, so I don't get the benefits of an off roader rebuild.

Drop an engine in it, something with a warranty. There's no guarantee the other used vehicle you'd buy would have an engine that lasts. At least this way you know what you're getting with the rest of the car and the engine will be warrantied.
