Just got a golden yesterday (waiting for the 6 weeks shots before we can pick her up) and wanted to know if there is anything specific I should know about them? Never had one, but have read they are very good dogs around people and seem to be highly loyal

Shouldn't you have asked this question prior to getting one?

Most loving caring dog but sheds like a mofo. I got a 1 year old greatest dog ever but I vacuum everyday

Oh and she loves water and fetching

Keep them away from chemistry sets, computers, etc. They have no idea what they're doing.

How energetic is yours typically? I've read as puppies they are hyper but once they grow they tend to settle down

As others said they like to like to retrieve things - you're going to be playing a lot of fetch with sticks and tennis balls. They also like to swim. You should try and take them to places they can go swimming from time to time.

They need to be brushed every so often to keep the fur from matting up. Also it doesn't hurt to get them trimmed or shaved to help with the dregs of summer. Read up on joint problems and hip dysplasia. Ive never had a golden that had problems but they happen sometimes with older dogs. There is a lot of information on when you should get your dog neutered(if male) and how it relates to joint problems down the road.

Easy dog to train and are a happy breed. Exercise it and your good to go.

they'll be stubborn first couple years. but they're the best dogs you can ask for.

be patient. I would keep him/her kenneled anytime you aren't there for the first year or so, until you don't think it will chew everytyhing in sight up.

talk to it, love it. take it out a shite load. like, take it out a lot. A LOT. Let it run, take it to the woods. Let it hurt itself, experience things, learn on its own. You don't have to baby it. Please don't. It's a dog, they're incredibly resilient.

HAVE FUN!

i'm not sure about this anymore. I have shaved mine the past two years, and only recently learned that it can ruin their undercoats and top coat. My boy's coat hasn't grown back properly, so I would so some reading and asking about this first. I love having mine shaved, but I'm afraid I have hurt his natural coat which helps regulate their body temp, both hot and cold

I wrestle with her about and hour every night before we go to bed. She has a burst of energy at nighttime so I try to wear her out before bed it works

We fenced in our backyard so she can run around during the day. They have plenty of energy but they do slow down when they get older.

I suppose that's possible. If your on the fence about shaving I would at least get it trimmed up a bit if you see it laboring (tired and difficulty breathing) during the summer months. That can be a shite ton of fur for a highly active dog in August. Probably depends on where your living and how much the dog outside running around

Yea, I mean I hate to see a long haired dog hot in summer. Like I said, this was just something I came upon recently, and still need to do more reading about it. But I think it has some validity.

Yep, supposedly the different layers of the coat serve different purposes. One being to actually help protect from the sun etc. We have shaved ours sometimes though and they do seem to enjoy it in the summertime. I didn't notice any difference in the coat when it grew back but admittedly didn't really inspect it or think about it.
