Have really flat feet but I use special inserts. I've always just worn my regular tennis shoes. Any recommendations?

Like Olympic lifting?

I have a couple pairs of Inov-8s that I really like.

For squatting, Olympic lifting and overhead work, look for Olympic lifting shoes

Cheap: Rogue
Avg: Reebok Oly Lifters
Awesome: AdiPower by Adidas or Nike Romeloes

Innov8 makes a really lightweight lifting shoe that's only good if you do crossfit stuff

Jesus Christ. Wear fricking tennis shoes or cross trainers. Are we at this point in society where we need special shoes to bench press and dumbell curls?

You need a shoe with a hard sole, which is why many have suggested chucks. Actual weightlifting shoes will have a heel lift which will help you get depth on your squat(or catch).

Would not recommend running shoes with a heel lift and cushioned sole.

If I wanted to compete: weightlifting shoes
Just for workout, not serious about competing: Chucks, Vibrams, or any other flat, hard sole shoe

It's been proven that a proper gentle massaging touch upon the inner sole can increase strength gains up to 8% while lying on our backs.

I use reebok lifters for squatting, cleans etc. All you really need though is a good flat shoe like some nanos or chuck taylors. Something that wont compress on you when you have weight on your back.

How is it that no one has brought up those toe shoes yet? Are they that out of style?

BTW, I hated seeing people walk around the gym in those damn things.

I could be wrong but I think OP might be looking for shoes to do squats, C&Js and snatch which are done in the sport of weightlifting.

If all you want to do is arm curls and bench press, by all means wear tennis shoes.
