If a tool box like this is FULL and is standing up in the back of your truck with the tailgate down, with only a string tied up to hold it back

You then drive on the freeway on a busy day of traffic then it flies out the back. What kind of penalty would you get?

I ask because this question was asked by a customer today who needs to take a tool box to his ranch

You should be fined for being an Alabama fan alone.

You'll be fine

Do you not know how to properly tie things down in the back of a truck?

There should be a picture of a big stainless steel toolbox

You are responsible for any damage to person or property it causes

Rent a bigger truck or borrow a trailer

Why only string to hold it down? Can you not afford $10 ratchet straps?

Tell him don't worry about it.

I just bought it and already picked it up and strapped it in the back of my truck and am halfway home with it.

Lay a piece of carpet in the back of your truck. Lay the toolbox on the carpet on it's side or back. Metal will easily slide on metal so the carpet prevents that and raises the amount of friction. This raises the amount of force required to move it.

Laying the toolbox on it's side provides quite a bit of friction. Laying it on it's back increases the surface contact area, thus raising the friction and lowering the center of gravity, making it more stable. Also, the lower profile from laying it down will decrease the wind drag coefficient, providing more stability and increasing the power of inertia to keep an object at rest, at rest.

TL;DR Without friction, none of us would be here.

None. You're good. Especially if you kill someone.

You're going to have to unload all the tools to set it on it's side. There a heavy SOB when loaded. Some mechanics hire a roll back wrecker to move their tool boxes when changing jobs.

I've heard that any object that falls off of a vehicle, once it comes in contact with the roadway is considered a road hazard. I've been on the scene of many vehicle accidents and a trooper told me that it's the person who gets hit by the debris, it's their responsibility. IDK if that's true, but maybe an OT Lawyer can answer.

That fricker is too tall. To properly go in the bed of your truck.

Eta: if you were standing it up
