What is your opinion of those who get rid of their dogs?

I'm not talking about people who dump their dogs in a ditch and drive away- we can all agree that those people are scum.

What about the people who, for one reason or another, go through a change (a move, a new child, etc) and decide to give their dog to a shelter or a friend? I understand there are some situations where there literally isn't another reasonable option. Maybe you have an aggressive dog who hates kids and you're having a child. The majority of the scenarios aren't like this, -and it's simply inconvenient to keep the dog.

My fiancé and I got our first dog about a year ago. I wouldn't give her up under any circumstance. I can't believe people do this. My dog is part of my family. Dogs are the most loyal beings on the planet, pleasing you is their sole purpose, and you can't even make some sacrifices to keep them? I can't fathom bonding for months-years with your dog and then saying "well we're moving and I don't want to have to try harder to find a place to accommodate him/her, so later."

What's a legitimate good reason, in your opinion, to get rid of your dog?

my opinion is that it is their dog, and they can do as they see fit

that is the problem......too many people worry about other people's stuff and don't focus enough on their own stuff

If you find a new family for your dog, that sucks for you, but that's fine.

If you take your family pet to a kill shelter because you're moving or something, you're an animal

Sure they can. Doesn't make them less of a piece of shite (in most cases).

There isn't a circumstance where I would get rid of my dog. I don't understand those people. I just figure they don't really want the thing

What are you babbling about? This is a message board where 80% of the topics are about how we feel about things that don't directly effect our own lives

True that they do become LIKE family. Props to those who, at the end of the day, can understand they are NOT family when it becomes a problem with an ACTUAL family member i.e. a kid.

They're almost as bad as someone who gets rid of their adopted kid.

After undergraduate graduation I left for OCS USAF then language school and had to leave my life long German Shephard with my sister and her roommate, they were renting an older house with a large yard out in the country so he had plenty of room to roam around, and he kept them feeling safe. He was already 13 when I left and he lived another 4 years. Passed while I was gone. Sad times.

I'm in the middle of a career change and there are certain jobs I cant and won't take because of my dog at home. It sucks because they are good opportunities, but there's always something else. Regardless of the job, I would be depressed without my dog, especially in a new city.

To re-home is one thing, but take to a shelter, then you are lower than whale white!

Ownership of a pet is both a responsibility and a reward. When you sign up for the pet, you also are signing up to take care of it always.
There are instances where, at times, the owners feel that they need to rid of a pet, such as having a baby, but that to me is always a cop out. One should be able to easily handle both a pet and a baby simultaneously. It's not that hard.

Too many variables to make a decision without more context. But in general, I think people should honor their commitments regardless of to whom or what they are.
