What is the purpose of old bridges being covered in the NE?

Just saw one in Vermont going down in the flood and don't know what the purpose of the roof is.

To protect the wood bridge. Seriously. with no metal or concrete, the bridges were all wood. They needed to be protected from the elements to last longer.

That's an interesting question.
Perhaps the roof protected the bridge from weathering to increase it's usable life.

Back in the days of horse drawn carriages, it was common practice to build bridges that were covered in the event that the travelers and their livestock were caught in instances of inclement weather.

Besides the obvious (weather), I'm sure the roof acted as a truss to increase stability.
