For instance a guy like Jan Van Leiden if you've listened to Dan Carlin's Hardcore History you know him. He was an Anabaptist in the 1500's who helped lead this revolution basically in Munster, Germany convincing tons of people the world was going to end.

Do all these people genuinely think the world is going to end? If not what is the end game if they are wrong?
I dk why but this fascinates me

true enough, I guess most of these guys end up getting killed or dying anyway so they never get to find out if they're right...

Jan Van Leiden

He was the guy who basically said he had God over his shoulder at all times and would literally turn around and have discussions with him, right? So he may have had a few screws loose, may have actually believed that God was telling him the world would end, or he may have just like the feeling of power he got when people thought he was essentially God's megaphone.

Yea I think he may actually have just been a crazy dude who heard voices
But I don't think all these dudes who have predicted the end of the world in history were insane. Plus what about the thousands of people who believed him?

Once the world didn't end was it just like, oh well back to normal life!

There have been 5 mass extinction events in world history that we know of. It's not exactly crazy to think we're going to face a 6th.

It's not crazy to predict a time and place the world will end and rally thousands of people behind you?

It is.

Even if you are a Christian, the Bible says (not a direct quote) that no one knows the time that it will take place.

Some people are always looking for something to belong to. Something bigger than themselves that will get them somewhere better than their current situation, even if it means through death.

Though some of the stuff put out by some factions of the early Christian church did contain some strong "end of days" and "kingdom of God will come in our life times" stuff.

Good question.

I always wondered why Jehova's Witnesses, who believe that only a certain, fixed number of people will get to heaven, are out recruiting.

Well Jesus spoke of the end as coming during HIS generation. Hard to know exactly what he was contemplating and it didn't happen anyway.

All the later stuff in Revelations came wah after Jesus and can be easily dismissed as the work of a crazy person. Of course most of the gospels were written long after Jesus too so maybe we shouldn't put much stock into any of it.

Usually lots of sex and money, then skipping town once their prophecy fails to happen, or moving the goalposts.

I think that's similar to asking "what's the end game of a drug addict?", is not a very forward thinking mindset. They just get hooked on the adrenaline and the power of it until they run out of road.

Who knows what resides in the heart of a man.

I would prefer that they invest their energies in doing what Jesus said as He ascended into Heaven...

I didn't even know it didn't happen until a few days later. We destroyed our computer and coffee maker out of precaution.
