What is an appropriate amount of personal time to spend away from your family every week?

This is the most discussed topic between my me and the mrs. The issue, I believe, stems from how we were raised.

My dad is what most would consider a workaholic. He was usually home by 6:30 or so, depending on the day. My dad also played 18 Saturday morning and another 18 Sunday after church. However, during the summer, he would typically play 36 on Saturday and 18 on Sunday.

On the other hand, her dad worked a more traditional 9-5 and was home for 5:30 dinner. He also doesn't hunt, fish, or golf. He is a sports fan, so he mostly just watches sports at home on the weekends.

We were raised on opposite ends of the spectrum in terms of how much time our dads were at home. Both of us have great dads, and neither of them missed an event of ours when we were growing up. But with nothing going on, her instinct is that we should all be together, while my instinct is that I should be at the golf course.

I wouldn't think either of our dads would be considered normal, but wanted some insight on what is perceived as a normal amount of time to spend away from your family on weekends?

I don't

If I golf it's during the work week, weekends are for family. There will be plenty of time for weekend golf after the kids are grown

Apparently, it is not one round of golf per week.

Happy wife, happy life bro

Edit: FWIW, me and my wife plan things out for our family way in advance. The way I figure it, if there's a free weekend and the "Honey Do" list ain't a freaking mile long, I'm free to plan what I want. Never been an issue really.

Oh, I also never miss any chance to spend time with my kid

Won't she run off if you let her outside too much?

If Jody would get his stamina up, she probably wouldn't care how long you were gone.

I go run for 1-2 hours on saturdays and sundays.

About 1-2 weekends a year I have a get away trip with some friends.

Otherwise, we are together.

I honestly left those details out on purpose. The amount of time she spends outside the home doesn't change what is a normal amount of time to spend outside of the home?

On the average we probably do things with our friends once every 2-3 weeks. And that isn't an all day event. Usually a movie, or just hanging out at someone's house. We've gone on the occasional longer all-day trips as well.

It's a balance. And it's healthy to do things apart from the family occasionally.

How happy was the mom in each situation? That answers your question.

I'm probably the wrong person to ask this question. I don't play golf but make up for it with fishing and hunting

I don't golf, hunt, or fish. My running can take some time, but it is very flexible. I can run out when things are quiet in the house, or go early in the morning.

My wife realizes that I don't have the other more time-consuming holidays. With that, she gives me some leeway.

I get home everyday around 6:30, and feel like I have it on easy street compared to my previous jobs.
