What do pharmacists actually do?

I'm waiting at the pharmacy for some ear drops to take care of my 3 year old's ear infection, and the lady behind the counter tells me they're working on it. Two other people are also here waiting on prescriptions.
Serious question though, what do pharmacists do these days? They aren't actually making medication at the store, are they? Are they just measuring out medication and bottling in smaller containers? Are they just counting out the # of pills for the prescription? What do they do that makes it take so long for prescriptions to get filled?

Some still do compounding.

They compound medicines, they read fricked up handwriting from doctors and make sure you get what you need.

Not familiar with the term, what does that mean? Are they actually forming the tablets?

None of the Drs that I deal with send in hand written prescriptions anymore (as far as I know).

They probably had dozens of orders to fill ahead of yours.

I always thought that they filled prescriptions.

Well for one they have to check drug/drug interactions which I would think is much easier now with computer programs for this. Our pharmacist is a friend ... I've seen him spend a good bit of time helping people to find alternative drugs due to say price and then having to deal with the MD office to get script changed. THEN they have to deal with people who don't get how expensive meds are, or that they don't understand that it can't be refilled yet or they can only pay for a portion of the script and then it has to be redone.
I'm sure many think that they just count pills but it's not that easy.

I get that. I don't really mind waiting. But there was a girl here just complaining because she had been waiting an hour. Just wondering what pharmacists actually do since I've never really though about it before, and I know they go through a significant amount of schooling.

Take 2 hours to count 30 pills.
ETA: oh, and deal drugs on the side.

Basically, they can tailor the drug/drop/whatever to the specific needs of the patient.

I will say that the CVS in Prairieville on Airline Hwy was great to deal with when we lived out there. I don't think I ever waited there. Guess that's why I've never really thought about it before.

Don't forget calling insurance companies to verify coverage, then having to explain to customers why the insurance companies say they won't cover a particular medicine.
Also, calling doctor's offices to verify a medicine that will possibly interact with something already prescribed that the customer "forgot" to tell the doctor he/she was already on.
Not every customer is an easy fill. Although my prescriptions usually are, I have had to deal with my mother's 12 prescriptions from 3 different doctors (some requiring insurance pre-authorization crap) and can sympathize with pharmacists.

We occasionally have issues with pharmacists trying to change scripts or telling clients that what we prescribe doesn't treat what we prescribed it for. The latter is pretty rare but has happened to me. Very annoying when they can't understand that animals don't always require the same dose or medications can be used for completely different conditions as they do in people

Is this a racial slur or are you a vet?

dvm at the end of his/her screen name ... guessing he/she is an actual vet.
