Let's say a person was sentenced to 5 years for $50'000+ in forgery/felony theft charges. How much time in should this person expect? I believe that at one point it was 2 for 1 for non violent crimes. First offender fwiw.

Good time eligibility and calculation is complicated and ever changing, and it depends in part on priors and the exact offense of conviction.

To guess how much time they will actually serve, you also have to consider parole. A Louisiana first felony offender could be eligible for parole after serving as little as 1/3 of their sentence. Some crimes are not eligible for parole at all, and once you have three felonies, you can't get it at all.

Non violent first time offenders can be eligible for parole after 33% of the sentence. So best case scenario they're looking at less than 2 years actual time on a 5 year sentence.

Eh, if it's one of things where a secretary/book keeper gets popped skimming from the business where she works, even when the amount is pretty hefty it never seems like they actually do time.

That is true, but those bitches need to do some time like any other thief. I don't understand why judges are so soft on them but lock up people for crimes that do much less harm.

Think it's 4 months 22 days = 1 year

He will do roughly 2 years on the 5.

He is also almost immediately eligible to be transferred to a work release program.

Because those bitches visit the judge in his quarters for a "pretrial diversion."

Very little time if any for a first offender. If it is a very close family member maybe you and the rest of your family can scrape up some cash and see if the person they stole from is willing to drop the charges in exchange for some restitution?
