I love history and lately have been on a WWII kick. Currently reading "Killing the Rising Sun" by Bill O'Reilly (highly recommend it) and already looking for what I'm going to read next.

Victory at Sea.

While not technically a book, it has some stuff you have to read.

The tigers are burning. Soviet pov of the battle of kursk.

Ordinary men. Talks about how some German soldiers were just ordinary people just following orders. Basically plays Devils advocate. Interesting read

Unbroken is one of the best stories I have ever heard. The movie blows. Flags of our Fathers is also very good. Atkinson series is very good as well.

Well, the guys on trial at Nuremberg weren't "ordinary men" as the title of the book would call them. It talks about a unit that was formed under conscription. I.e. Joe blow the farmer who was put in uniform under threat of death

"Killing the Rising Sun" has a couple paragraphs about this and other improvised uses for equipment that is really interesting.

The Good War by Studs Terkel

An oral history that gives some micro accounts of how the war affected Americans - those on the battlefield and the homefront. The title is somewhat of an oxymoron - WWII battles tore some folks up psychologically - it's not associated with WWII vets the way it is with Vietnam vets. War is hell.

Not sure how one of these two books hasn't been mentioned already.

Flyboys: A True Story of Courage by James Bradley

and

Flags of Our Fathers by James Bradley and Ron Powers

Both are excellent, but Flyboys is especially good. Details a lot of U.S. air corp history throughout the war in the western theater, including the American volunteers who fought for China prior to Pearl Harbor. Flags of Our Fathers is based on the battle for Iwo Jima, and the 2 flag raisings on the island mount.

I really want to read his other two books, The Imperial Cruise, and The China Mirage.

If you want a comprehensive history, I'd recommend the Second World War by John Keegan.

Prisoners of the Japanese: POWs of WWII
by Gavin Daws

Unbelievable stories of how Allied POWs were treated by the Japanese.

A really good read....

Similar to The Tigers are Burning, check out The Cross of Iron by Willi Heinrich about the German infantry on the Eastern Front. It's well-written historical fiction.

If you like detective stories, Philip Kerr wrote a series about a German police detective.

Alan Furst has also written some good historical fiction. Spies of the Balkan is a great read.
