My father recently passed away over Christmas and my mother does not really have a lot to do other than going to church.

Does anyone have any recommendations on things for her to do? She is still well enough to live on her own / drive but I am afraid that she will go crazy with boredom / loneliness.

I was thinking maybe classes at the local JUCO but was kind of empty after that.

The local rec center might have activities/classes throughout the week. Some may be for seniors specifically.

What about a part-time job in a business or industry she is interested in? Volunteer at a hospital or charity near home.

Volunteering at the Church's thrift store seems polular among the older folks. Both my grandmothers do it and seem to enjoy the time out of the house.

Does her church have activities? My mom is 75, and she has gotten a lot more involved there with various groups, both social and volunteer. She's got a group of other widowed women there who get together weekly. She's started going to the Y during the day to walk/exercise. She's in a couple of craft groups for sewing & knitting.

Encourage her to visit friends & siblings who don't live nearby.

What did they do together? I mean she is retired, its not like they did nothing but bang all day. Can she not continue doing what they did together but instead of with him with someone else like friends? Or did they just watch tv or something all day?

As said, plenty of things like volunteer, work at a place she likes, etc.

When you don't need money, working for cheap or volunteering opens up tons of opportunities.

I know the church has some sort of group of women that get together and does a pot luck type thing. Other than that I would have to check.

Good call on the Y.

I lived there for a few years starting my teaching career. If you enjoy the outdoors, there are things to do. If not, I am really not sure. I didn't really enjoy it there. If she lives near DeSoto county, though, there are a lot of senior programs that keep folks involved - especially in Hernando. Nice town.

Yeah that is the main problem is that she was very old school and her life pretty much revolved around raising kids / cooking / cleaning. So she did not have a ton of hobbies.

Luckily my dad was responsible and left her in good shape after he passed so yeah she is free to do things if I can get her to...she is fairly stubborn.

Check out activities at local senior center or assisted living facility.

My father died Christmas last year so I'm well versed in this area.

GO VISIT OFTEN at least for the first 6 months
Encourage her to volunteer somewhere
Talk to her friends about visiting her. Ask them to take her places
Have her join an organization that she likes
Get her a pet (dog or cat) I recommend dog because they need more nurturing
GO VISIT OFTEN
