1.5 year old Lab/Collie mix. She started to get real sick a couple of weeks ago. She stopped eating and lost all energy. We ran bloodwork, ultra sound, etc. Her liver enzymes were sky high and her pancreas and lymph nodes were swollen.

Originally thought she had eaten something that was toxic and gave her meds for that. She got worse. Then thought it was a tick borne disease, gave her meds and she got better. Vet sent a tick panel off and it came back negative. Thought we were in the clear because she responded to the meds. She started to get worse again so tried a different medication and then she got a little better.

Took her to get blood work again today as she stopped eating and all her levels in her blood work were through the roof.

Only other other option is exploratory surgery and possibly chemo that would cost some $7000.

Going to be a bad day.

It depends on how you look at it.

From a selfish human standpoint yes it's an awful feeling but not having your dog suffer any longer makes it a gift almost.

Yep dog are awesome.

And prayers sent....we went thru this twice in the last year.

Yep I'm at peace with it. Just difficult because she's only a year and a half.

Had to put my 5 yo boxer down in Jan. Spontaneous pneumothorax. After about 2 1/2 weeks of trying to manage it in hopes it would heal on its own, he got way worse really quickly. Held him upright while he was standing on the vet's table when he put him down. He just melted into my arms and that was that. Sucks so much. Best dog I ever owned but I was glad he went peacefully and is no longer suffering.

Dude, I'm so sorry for you. Love my dog and cried like a bitch when we put him down. About to go cry now.

someone gotta post it.

If it should be that I grow frail and weak
And pain should keep me from my sleep,
Then will you do what must be done,
For this -- the last battle -- can't be won.
You will be sad I understand,
But don't let grief then stay your hand,
For on this day, more than the rest,
Your love and friendship must stand the test.
We have had so many happy years,
You wouldn't want me to suffer so.
When the time comes, please, let me go.
Take me to where to my needs they'll tend,
Only, stay with me till the end
And hold me firm and speak to me
Until my eyes no longer see.
I know in time you will agree
It is a kindness you do to me.
Although my tail its last has waved,
From pain and suffering I have been saved.
Don't grieve that it must be you
Who has to decide this thing to do;
We've been so close -- we two -- these years,
Don't let your heart hold any tears.

Been there several times. For me it's a mixture of sadness with the belief that I am doing a extremely loving act. After all, that dog can't make that decision and the decision I have made has prevented more pain and suffering for the animal ..... thus, a very caring, loving act.

One of the hardest things to do.

I had to have my Lab who was 1 month shy of 14 years put down about a year and a half ago. She had come up paralyzed in her back legs after a slip disc.

Tried everything, even got her one of those dog wheelchairs, but eventually just put her out of her misery.

Sucked losing my partner in crime. That dog was smarter than a lot of people and better behaved than most kids... And adults.

The Vet ended up not even charging us because he said he'd not seen two people that cared so much about a pet and tried so much to help her. Honestly, it's probably because I cried like a little girl when they did it.

TL;Dr: Sorry for your loss.
