13 seems reasonable...A lot of after school activities start around then, making real friends

What age should a child be handed a cell phone?

Our 2 oldest are 12 and 11. Their 4 friends from down the road were over today and they all 4 had phones, still not getting them one until they start driving and get a job..we have a home phone for if they need something...when we get one, it will be a flip phone with just minutes..

This is such a cop out. My kids understand that technology is useful but we don't spend hours on our phone or tablet.
My biggest pet peeve is going to dinner and everyone at the table is just staring at a device. Freaking talk to your kids and ask them how their day is going!
We have a DVD player in both cars but our kids don't get to use it. Even when we go on long car rides. We just play games and talk. You should try it sometimes. Technology is used today as a babysitter and it shouldn't be.

My boys (11 & 9) both have "phones" . They are old iphone 4's the wife and I had in a drawer. They have no cell service, so they are basically used to play angry birds or whatever shitty app like Minecraft they have on them. They can play on it for an hour a day.....or use that time for the Xbox (really don't want my kids to be weird arse gamers) If we're going to be out an about they'll take the phones since they won't be around the Xbox. We usually get some looks from people who think the kids have phones.

I ran AAU track and played AAU basketball in 7th grade as a 12 year old. We were all over the south some times gone for 3 or 4 days at a time.
I didn't get expensive phones until I was 16 and had a job.

Why should that even matter when making a decision about your own kid?

Daughter just got one for her 13th birthday. She was pretty much the last kid in the 7th grade to have one. As others have said, it is the activities after school that finally necessitated it. She paid for half of it though since she wanted a $250 phone instead of taking an older free phone.

About to purchase my oldest daughter a phone and service ... she's 11 and about to be in sixth grade.
The youngest, 8, will receive one as well ... probably too young but with the service plan specials that are happening right now, she won't cost us any additional money except a phone.

I don't understand this either. I had after school activities in 7th grade and got by just fine.

I'll probably give mine a phone in 8th grade. Feel like thats around the age where kids start getting dropped off at the movies/mall and don't have parents with them at all times...although it'll be my old phone and not brand new. When she can buy her own phone is when she can have newest model

I keep seeing kids younger and younger with phones. My wife and I agreed that our kids won't have their first phone until they are 16 and have their own job to pay for it.
You're kids will hate you. And they'll probably still get a hold of a phone. You just won't know about it.

That's surprising. That's around the age kids get phones these days. My son was one of the last kids in his 5th grade class to get one. They're just a part of life now.

When the child is old enough and mature enough to be responsible with it.

You see so many young kids now that are just zombies with the phones and tablets. It can't be healthy.

sorry but that's ridiculous.
and for all the excuses like "after school activities," its BS. kids want phones to text, snapchat and whatever else. parents just cant say 'no' to their kids anymore.
