Water existing with some amount of prevalence in various places in our solar system means that life structured in something of a similar way as on earth is possible where the water is located. This in itself is an exciting idea because if at some point we are able to find even simple life within our own solar system, this goes a long way towards suggesting that life is a common phenomenon in our galaxy. Baby steps.

And really it is just exciting to learn more about the cosmos around us.

I believe the anouncment yesterday wasn't the mere existence of the water there. We had apparently known that for some time. It's that there is apparently flowing water.

That NASA can land a Volkswagen sized probe on Mars using a computer that can detect the presence of water, but Chicken can't create a search function thats worth a damn.

You can make fun of me if you want to, but I've always thought that we'll find a great civilization under the dust and dirt on Mars (like in a desert, the huge dust storms have covered it up).

It may even be an advanced civilization, and probably plays a role in ancient astronauts.

We need to land something on Mars that is capable of digging a deep hole. We'll be astonished at what we find. Remember that years ago the climate on Mars was similar to earths, and assuming we don't destroy ourselves through nukes or climate change, will probably be what the earth looks like billions of years from now (I read somewhere that the planet is already past its prime for life sustaining features).

Where did you hear this? I don't think it's true.

Anyway, Mars doesn't have an active core, and I think it has theoretically been inactive for a long time. A planet can't sustain life without an active core.
