My dad started having difficulty breathing will eating supper. Next thing I knew he stopped breathing, so I started giving the Heimlich maneuver while he was passed out. Eventually I heard him take the biggest breath in and was relieved he was conscious. Never found food in his mouth - found out later he had a heart attack and, technically, died. I was numb for hours after that event...

The defibrillator probably saved the guy, from what I have read CPR alone for cardiac arrest has a very low survival rate. Automatic portable defibrillators are around $1500, not very expensive considering they save lives. I am a small government type person, but I really would not mind if all places that serve the public were required to have one, just like exit lights, handicap access etc. are required. My wife and I are getting old and we have considered buying one.

LINK

Actually they can be bought for under $1000.00

Probably not a bad idea. I live in the country, would take an ambulance at least 15 minutes to get to my house, maybe 20.

I don't think medical-related people realize how many regular people have never witnessed resuscitation. One of my friends who is a NP said real life CPR is some violent shite to see when someone's coding.

I always thought defibs were for shocking hearts back into rhythm, not restarting them.

I took a CPR class, and they said screw the breathing. Pound that chest to get blood flowing to the brain. Like 30-45 hard compressions. Ribs be damned.

It's amazing stuff to see someone come back.

In all the codes I've been involved with, I've yet to not crack a few ribs. If you don't, you probably aren't doing adequate compressions.

My sis (no pics assholes) is a nurse, and I watched her snap into emergency mode once and revive someone.

She's my little sister, and it was one of the more incredible things I've ever seen. Our whole family was in awe.

I've had the displeasure of seeing three people die before my eyes. My dad and two people while I was at work. Also, came upon a guy one night who had been cut in half by a train.

Correct, most of the time when ppl have a cardiac arrest their heart goes into ventricular tachycardia, pretty much the heart muscle has a seizure, it's no longer pumping blood so there patient goes unconscious. The defib shocks the heart back into rythm

The defibrillator basically stops the heart in hopes of a pacemaker kicking on again. If heart isn't beating and no activity you aren't gonna shock. Unsynchronized shocks are done for V-fib and V-tach. The heart isn't truly "beating" but it is quivering. I've been a medic for many years and have never broken a rib doing chest compressions, at least I feel pretty certain. I've saved quite a few but will say I lost one just the other day, even shocked him twice in V-fib. Didn't matter, it was his time to go.

ETA: maybe I should have broke his ribs
