Was I wrong? Four instances in Old Town Alexandria.

So, on New Years Eve my wife and I are on a pedestrian crossing at the Metro station, and a fellow in a pickup truck from out of nowhere brakes about a foot from my body. I hadn't seem him coming, was startled, so looked at him rather angrily. He then rolled down his window and yelled at me "What??? You're going to be angry at THAT? I saw you, buddy. Happy new year." I just told him to get lost.

Then, on New Years Day I'm walking in the hotel lobby and some woman in a chair is watching me. So I tell her congenially with a big smile "have a happy new year!" and she just ignores me and looks down at her newspaper. So I counter with "ok, then don't."

The next day my wife and I are walking our dogs and this guy with three beautiful, identical black standard poodles comes walking by. My wife tells him "oh, they are so beautiful!" The guy acts as if she exceeded her right to free speech and ignores her, just walking right on past. So I say "yeah, can't say the same about their master, though." I'm sure he heard me.

Then on a later walk as I have two small dogs on a leash there's a jogger coming toward us on the sidewalk. I move over to the side but just as he reaches us Minnie, for whatever reason, lunges over to his side and her leash impedes his progress (although he had slowed to a walk at that point). Although technically we had as much right to the sidewalk as he did, I tell him "I don't know why she did that I'm really sorry." He just looked at me with an angry look as though he had been critically injured, and started to jog away. I said again "I said I'm sorry!" Without turning around he yelled back in an angry voice "pay attention next time!". So I replied with "yeah, buddy, pay attention to THIS", although I didn't actually make a physical gesture.

I hate rude people.

Funny, I have nothing but good experiences every time I'm in old town. Maybe you just have one of those faces....

In every instance there is an asshat who says some rude stuff just to get the last word in.

If you can't say something nice...

When you talk, does it come out in English or do you bark?

If someone is rude after I attempt to be nice, I let it go. Snapping back like you've done here only validates their behavior in their minds.

a lot of people dont' want to be talked to by strangers. I don't get it, because I like having nice interactions with people that I don't know. It feels like a win.

But I have noticed that you walk around like you're in a good mood looking to make one of those interactions happen, it comes off as a little crazy.

Sounds like you were looking for things to be 'insulted' over.

Question - what percentage of your interactions over that interval were pleasant?

If you are getting nothing but negative interactions, there may be something about your persona that turns people off.

I am as pleasant a person as I can imagine in random meetings, but I don't always reply to pro-forma greetings from strangers. Usually do, but there are times when the breathing cycle or my personal thought process just makes it inconvenient to utter an immediate response - and then the moment has passed and I let it go. If someone were to make some snide remark because of that, I would think - "sounds just like Rex."

Do you look for opportunities to be miserable?
