It's really hard to take statements like this seriously. Even if you disagreed with him he was certainly not a moron.

when the priest came for last rites, hitch actually converted him to atheism

He and William F. Buckley are having a scotch in heaven and laughing at what an idiot you are.

He was an interesting guy, and he wasn't dumb, but his wisdom was often trite and catchphrasy like the quote noted above.
"Religion ends and philosophy begins..." That's simply nonsensical. He didn't even really believe such drivel. It really just encapsulates his true essence -> arrogance.
If that impresses you, well, there's nothing one can say to dissuade an arrogant close mind.

While I agree that he was right on the most important question that faces man, he was always drunk which I feel is the opposite

It's amazing how an intellectual atheist can make you all abandon the love of Jesus so quickly. He owned you in life and death.
Nothing upsets these people quicker than even the suggestion that they might actually die and that's basically it, as if it is unthinkable that the universe could somehow continue to function without them being a living part of it for eternity.
A combination of narcissism and fear that I haven't been infected by since I was 12.

There are a lot of posters with lame schtick here, but your wannabe IRA catholic shite is by far the lamest.

I'm pretty sure you're projecting.

If there is a heaven and a hell, why would Hitchens, who worked hard to convert people to atheism and who spent a lot of time attacking the most important saint of the 20th century in Mother Teresa ever be allowed into heaven? He would be burning in the 9th level of hell.

your standard atheist here, perhaps too young to understand why this guy was so important
seemed to me more like a clever writer who would say abrasive things to get people who already agreed with him to cheer
i don't really see too many philosophers or cultural critics as being remotely hero-worthy though. i do find it incredibly lame when people use the term "enlightened" unironically though

I hate him mainly for his attacks on Mother Teresa.
He raised very good points, even if could have done so more diplomatically.

I also hate him for being a Marxist
Which he hadn't been for 25 years when he died. I'm assuming you're conservative then? How can you hate him when he basically allied himself with conservatives in his later years?

his famous quotes are awesomely inflammatory and abrasive. more to him than those, though.
his books are phenomenal. watch his debates on youtube

You should read some of his less political stuff. He wrote mainly on literary and cultural affairs for Vanity Fair and the Atlantic and it's a completely different experience than his polemical stuff (which I can see why some would find it tiresome). He was astonishingly well-traveled and experienced and the perspective he brought to those areas is eye opening.
