Now if you are talking the driver shortage, that's another concept altogether. The industry is currently between 25,000 - 40,000 short, with a projection of over 200,000 short by 2022 if the trend doesn't stop.

No, the industry has a shitty pay problem. Getting paid cents per mile instead of per hour worked is 75% of the problem, especially when shippers and receivers take 3+ hours to load/unload and the companies are paying the drivers nothing in return for their work. Sitting in traffic? Not getting paid. Getting inspected by DOT? Wheels aren't moving, therefore you're not getting paid.

E-logs are here. Time for the industry to switch from cents per mile to a pay per hour that has on duty time + driving time = pay. You'll see the fatigued driver and the pay problem fix itself, especially when the companies have to start paying overtime on drivers who are working 40 - 70 hours per week.

A large portion of semi drivers have drug/alcohol problems, so handing them keys to a semi seems like a great idea.

FIFY

Could they really be any worse in BR?

Did you make that up? Not saying I disagree, but is that part of a sales call? I

Didn't make it up. It's from the American Trucking Association. The driver shortage issue has been a top industry concern for over a decade now.

Not sure what you are arguing for. Nowhere did I day it doesn't have a pay problem. I just said there's a difference between the turnover problem and shortage problem. Turnover - not due to pay. Shortage - industry pay levels have a lot to do with it among other things, especially in the truckload segment.

^^^^This. Swift, one of the largest trucking companies (10,000+ trucks), in a recent SEC filing to investors downgraded their earnings potential because of driver shortages and even sold off underutilized trucks that they couldn't find drivers for.

And the drug and alcohol problem in the trucking industry is not nearly as prevalent as in the past because of random drug tests.

Considering the drug testing, driving record, criminal record, and DOT physical requirements, a lot of perspective drivers are not hireable.

Interesting story that was on NBC News last night about how Utah is dealing with the chronic homeless. They're giving them homes.

And as weird as it sounds, it seems to be working, at least, according to the report.
