We recently had our United Way week at work. It was fine, and we do some nice things stacking can goods, but I just can't help feeling a little blah about it. I want to do some volunteering, but I feel it needs to be something I'm passionate about for me to really put any energy into it.

A year ago I did Ronald McDonald House for 6 months thinking I'd enjoy being around the kids, but it was mainly just monotonous paperwork and sitting at the front desk doing nothing.

Trying to think of things that I've always enjoyed, and the two things that came to mind are sports and construction (working with my hands). Anyone know of volunteer programs that either A) Attempt to get kids off the streets through sports or B) Attempt to teach potential or current high school dropouts a trade so they can make a living?

I've done some research but can't find much. Anything would be appreciated for those who have experience in either of these.

It would be in the greater Houston area, by the way. TIA!

I've done habitat a few times, which is obviously construction-related.

I'm on a volunteer dive team and I absolutely love it. Kids like seeing divers at the Aquarium and I get to keep my skills in check.

Lots of museums are staffed by volunteers if you are into that.

Never volunteer for anything unless it's Court ordered.

My pastor says I don't need to volunteer, as long as I give a little money every week I'm going to heaven

Yea, I was hoping to do something that more teaches at-risk high school kids skills they can use to find real employment as opposed to the standard habitat house (which I've done as well and is fine).

The kids that do Habit are dumb as frick. I realized after 20 minutes why they don't let them use power tools. I forget what organization they get them from, but it's pretty bad
