Does anyone know who to talk to about working on the a/c on a 2012 Volkswagen TDI Sportwagen? Based on the symptoms, it sounds like the refrigerant control valve (RCV)that's gone bad, apparently a common problem. The stealership (Southpoint in BR) says they can only get the compressor, not the RCV, and wants $1,500 to do it (just out of warranty of course). Gordon & Sandifer referred me to Wedge Kyes, who wants even more. I can find a brand new compressor for just north of $300. Any recommendations on someone who will install it here in BR would be appreciated. Doing it myself just isn't an option for me.

is this what's going on with your vehicle?
quote:

Hello all, My A/C simply quit the other day, prompting an investigation, mostly to learn about it. My first indication of a bad RCV valve was working fans, working A/C button lights, but simply warm air. The pressure also read 82psi (static) on the low side......Way too much!!!! There was also a gurgling sound in the dash when turning off the A/C. The low side service port is the line closest to the fender, with the larger diameter (3/4") aluminum line. After a safe recovery of the refrigerant in the system, the valve can be removed:

That's what I suspect the problem is. I can likely get the part, or even a whole new compressor, for a decent price. It's changing it out where my expertise ends, and I need someone who can and will install it.

there was a thread on here awhile back about a guy who worked on VW's near southpoint for less than what the dealership charged, however when I asked him for a quote for the 40k service on my 2013 Passat TDI he was only slightly less than dealership his name is Brian (225) 953-0963 maybe he can help you

Southpoint recently replaced the compressor in my Passat for free since my car had only just gone out of warranty but they have to get approval from VW. How far out of warranty is your vehicle?

Thanks for the tip. The Sportwagen is less than 3 years old, but 9K miles over the 36K warranty. Maybe it's worth a call to VW.

Just a suggestion, check your coolant levels in your radiator and reservoir.

My AC started going in and out a few months back. It lasted for several weeks, and I just figured I would tough it out. One day, I noticed my temperature gauge was notching up on a long drive. Pulled over at an autozone and the radiator was almost bone dry. Apparently, either the guys that changed my oil didn't get the cap on tight after the checked the fluids or I've got a leak somewhere and the crazy high temps caused it to evaporate out over time.

Anyway, filled it up with 50/50 and the AC magically started working.

Just a suggestion before you spend $1500 getting it fixed.

AlL I can say is this .....I've had this exact problem come thru the shop and I am honest with customers so I DID just get the sensor. After installing , the ac still didn't work at times. I called a buddy who was a tech at a VW dealership and was told that the compressors are the problem .
