'Till Stoneman's cavalry came and tore up the tracks again
In the winter of '65, we were hungry, just barely alive
By May the tenth, Richmond had fell, it's a time I remember, oh so

The Night they Drove Old Dixie Down

Back with my wife in Tennessee, when one day she called to me
"Virgil, quick, come see, there goes Robert E Lee"
Now I don't mind choppin' wood, and I don't care if the money's no good
Ya take what ya need and ya leave the rest,
But they should never have taken the very best

And all the people were singin

Crazy to think Scorsese was blasted out of his fricking mind on coke every second of every day he made that masterwork.

Crazy to think most of the band was blasted on coke and made that masterwork

Crazy to think that the whole band was Canadian aside from Levon Helm and they wrote the best Civil War folk song. And some of the best folk songs ever written.

And the only popular song about the Acadian Exile.

I could be wrong, but I'm pretty sure Dixie, Cripple Creek, and The Weight are among the songs that Levon primarily wrote.

This would be a source of animosity later, as you're probably aware

Levon wrote most of the songs. Robbie just stole them.

You are wrong. Robbie Robertson (a Canadian, no less) wrote all of those. Though Levon's vocals and drumming had a lot to do with how popular they were. He was the lone southerner in The Band, I think.

Robbie Robertson got all of the writing credits*

Levon never reconciled with Robbie because he felt he never got his due for the songs he primarily wrote. He goes into detail about this in his book. The rest of the band members agree that the writing credits were shared. Robertson is the only one who says otherwise.

quote:

Helm claims the opposite in his 1993 autobiography, “This Wheel’s On Fire,” in which he claims that Robertson ripped off his bandmates by claiming the lion’s share of songwriting credits in The Band (he could not be reached for an interview): “I even confronted Robbie over this issue during this era,” Helm wrote. “… I cautioned that most so-called business moves had [destroyed] a lot of great bands and killed off whatever music was left in them. I told Robbie that The Band was supposed to be partners … Well, it never quite worked out that way. We stayed in the divide and conquer mode

Good info, did not realize that. Something I had read by as expressed by Robertson gave details about how he was specifically inspired for certain songs, the weight and the night they drove Ole Dixie down were both specifically detailed. I never looked into it any further. In retrospect with what you have provided, it does seem more in tune with both Helm's upbringing and style inclinations. Appreciate the info.

I do think the Robertson was the most talented musically in the group but I suspect he was also loaded with both ego and insecurities, as seemingly many great musicians and artists. It's sad that these sorts of things happen in great bands all the time.
