When the federal government investigates a police department, it’s usually looking at allegations that officers use excessive force or racially profile residents.

Last week, the Department of Justice (DOJ) said that it was coming to the rural Louisiana town of Ville Platte, to investigate the police department and the Evangeline Parish Sheriff’s Office, which is also headquartered in the town. It said it would look into allegations that the officers detain residents in their jails without proper cause.

quote:

Under the curfew, people couldn’t walk their dogs, go to the corner store or visit their friends at night, unless they had a car.

Police soon began making arrests, sweeping up “hundreds” of residents every night just for being outside after 10 p.m., according to the complaint. The mayor, Jennifer Vidrine, said at the time that she had imposed the curfew in response to a series of car break-ins, and that it would last for 60 days. The city council extended it three times.

The bevy of new fines from curfew violators created a “monetary windfall for the city,” the complaint said, “and thus, a tremendous incentive to continue the curfew.”

quote:

One is a ban on sagging pants. Specifically, the city’s municipal code requires that pants be “size appropriate and secured at the waist to prevent the pants from falling more than three inches below the hips (crest of the ilium) causing exposure of the person or the person’s undergarments.”

The city also requires residents to wear “something reflective as an outer garment such as an armband, or parka” when walking after dark.”The reflective material is to be visible from all directions,” a town ordinance reads. “This will enable drivers to see the walking resident more clearly.”

The police began enforcing that ordinance in January 2011, at the same time as the curfew, according to city council meeting minutes.

The penalty for violating either rule is a fine with a maximum penalty of $200 — and 30 days in jail for those who can’t pay it.

Anybody have any stories to share about the police and Ville Platte?

Probably not, mostly white people on TD, and those laws were obviously written for blacks.

Also, all I know about ville platte is that their accents are worse than down the bayou accents.

If people would have left the saggy pants shite alone, the trend would be over by now. Who cares what other people wear? Pick your freaking battles man. No brains at all.

If people are so up in arms about it, then maybe they should look into why they allowed the bolded portion to happen without voting those councilmen out or recalling them.

Well yeah they should get rid of them. That being said, corruption and abuse of power is inexcusable regardless if citizens try to oust them or not.

The question is why didn't they? Why did they allow them to vote FOR it 4 times (voted for it once and then extended 3 times). If such a policy was so unpopular, then why was this not addressed by recalling their councilmen? Heck, Gonzales recalled one of theirs because he dared to not vote for more money for the Gonzales Police Department to upgrade their cruisers. I think I would have been all up in arms after the first time they extended the curfew.

They should look into the shitty speed trap Pine Prarie runs over there. No reason for traffic to have to slow down all the way to 45 in that shitty "village"

VP has some fineazz women, no lie. They might want to send some non-heterosexual investigators over there or someone's getting impregnated.

Before anyone says racism here:

Mayor? Black Woman
Chief Of Police? Black Man
Sherriff? White Man

I believe 3 of the city council members are black too after googling them, no pics to look at.

There was a stretch of armed robberies behind donnys in the parking lot for a while.
I think it prompted the curfew.

This, but it's riot season, so the hacks will come out in full force.

There probably needs to be an investigation into voter disenfranchisement. It's the only way something like that is possible.
