“we were all partying the night before. We weren’t expecting any action because we were in a support unit. It was the only time I ever went into combat stoned. You get really alert when you are stoned because you have to be.”

quote:
For conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity in action at the risk of his life above and beyond the call of duty. Sgt. Lemon (then Sp4), Company E, distinguished himself while serving as an assistant machine gunner during the defense of Fire Support Base Illingworth.
When the base came under heavy enemy attack, Sgt. Lemon engaged a numerically superior enemy with machine gun and rifle fire from his defensive position until both weapons malfunctioned. He then used hand grenades to fend off the intensified enemy attack launched in his direction. After eliminating all but 1 of the enemy soldiers in the immediate vicinity, he pursued and disposed of the remaining soldier in hand-to-hand combat.
Despite fragment wounds from an exploding grenade, Sgt. Lemon regained his position, carried a more seriously wounded comrade to an aid station, and, as he returned, was wounded a second time by enemy fire. Disregarding his personal injuries, he moved to his position through a hail of small arms and grenade fire. Sgt. Lemon immediately realized that the defensive sector was in danger of being overrun by the enemy and unhesitatingly assaulted the enemy soldiers by throwing hand grenades and engaging in hand-to-hand combat.
He was wounded yet a third time, but his determined efforts successfully drove the enemy from the position. Securing an operable machine gun, Sgt. Lemon stood atop an embankment fully exposed to enemy fire, and placed effective fire upon the enemy until he collapsed from his multiple wounds and exhaustion. After regaining consciousness at the aid station, he refused medical evacuation until his more seriously wounded comrades had been evacuated.

The real lesson here boys and girls, is that you can smoke weed during war time and the Army is desperate for warm bodies.

Nowhere in that article does it say he has to give the medal back. They're not letting him keep the medal are they?

Well, he was also drunk, so that negates the highness.
He can keep it. Nothing more American than fighting drunk, just like Patton.

Smelt it. Make it into a bullet.
Fire the bullet at the recipient.
Fire the bullet at the recipient.

I'd be willing to bet he wasn't the only one to ever fight stoned or drunk. And if I was next to him I'd prefer stoned. Drunks tend to sway too much and wave weapons around.
He deserves more weed.
He deserves more weed.

Now imagine what he could've done on meth. He probably could've overrun Hanoi by himself!

Until any of you have done the things this guy did, you're not in a position to criticize the actions of this man or the manner in which he did it. Pathetic scum

Never smoked weed until I got to Nam, plenty were stoned all for good reason. Scared shitless

I'm pretty sure he was being sarcastic.

Focus. Fire a gun. We all need some weed to lean on.

He may have helped in the conflict in Vietnam, but he was a traitor in the WAR on drugs. Let him keep his medals, but give him a fair trial for treason as well.

Nixon had yet to declare war on drugs when this man performed his heroic act. It's kind of like how we're cool with all of the muslims that were already in America before Bush declared war on islam, but we kill all the rest of them now.
