B-17 Flying Fortress
The Boeing B-17 Flying Fortress is a four-engine heavy bomber developed in the 1930s for the United States Army Air Corps (USAAC). Competing against Douglas and Martin for a contract to build 200 bombers, the Boeing entry outperformed both competitors and exceeded the air corps' performance specifications. Although Boeing lost the contract because the prototype crashed, the air corps ordered 13 more B-17s for further evaluation. From its introduction in 1938, the B-17 Flying Fortress evolved through numerous design advances.

I'd love to take that flight, too - but only that flight.
I would not have wanted to be up there flying over Germany with flak and the Luftwaffe all over the damn place.

The Collings Foundation does a Wings of Freedom tour where you can take flights in the B-17, B-24, B-25, and a P-51 Mustang. They're about $450 per flight.
ETA: I think the P-51 flight is much more expensive.

My dad went up in one of those a couple of years ago in NOLA. He took videos the entire time, I'll post at some point this week after I upload them.

My uncle was a navigator on a B-17 and was shot down over Italy. He spent 18 months in a German pow camp. Lost his teeth and hair from starvation. The Russians freed his pow camp in 1945.

Yeah...tailgunners had a very short lifespan.

This would be in the front of the plane in the nose part.

My uncle was a tailgunner on a 17. He was killed in a crash over England trying to limp a crippled plane home. His younger brother was a tailgunner on a 24. He died a week or so later in a training crash in Colorado. Their bodies made it home about the same time.

I'd heard an interview with a fight pilot that did bomber escorts who said the bomber crew were insanely brave because unlike the fighters who could dodge things the bombers had to keep pushing straight forward (right into flack and enemy fire).

HBO is supposedly in the process of making the third installment to the band of brothers/the pacific sagas called "the mighty eighth". Follows a B-17 crew in similar fashion to both the previous shows. Nothing but b/s rumors and some articles at this point but if it ends up fully completing production then we'll have a hell of a great series to enjoy. God bless America and god bless HBO.

You can fly in one at Lone Star Flight Museum in Galveston. It's about to move to Ellington Field. $450 for 20-30min. Max 6 people.

I have no idea if the project is still active but the released a teaser/proof of concept clip a few years ago.

My FIL was a pilot for the B17. RIP. I have a piece of German flak at the house that he dug out from the side of his plane. One mission, his plane was the only one to return and he cried every time he talked about it.

One of my great uncles flew on a B-17. Was shot down over Germany. Body never recovered, but about 10 years ago a kid in Germany found his Holy Cross class ring. It was returned to my family.
Only small parts of the plane have been recovered. No bodies from the wreckage have been found as far as I know.
