I found this tidbit of info. I usually stand with my hand over my heart. But now I read this:

quote:

SEC. 595. MILITARY SALUTE FOR THE FLAG DURING THE NATIONAL ANTHEM BY MEMBERS OF THE ARMED FORCES NOT IN UNIFORM AND BY VETERANS.

Section 301(b)(1) of title 36, United States Code, is amended by striking subparagraphs (A) through (C) and inserting the following new subparagraphs: ``(A) individuals in uniform should give the military salute at the first note of the anthem and maintain that position until the last note; ``(B) members of the Armed Forces and veterans who are present but not in uniform may render the military salute in the manner provided for individuals in uniform; and ``(C) all other persons present should face the flag and stand at attention with their right hand over the heart, and men not in uniform, if applicable, should remove their headdress with their right hand and hold it at the left shoulder, the hand being over the heart;

Note: Part (C) applies to those not in the military and non-veterans. The phrase "men not in uniform" refers to civil service uniforms like police, fire fighters, and letter carriers - non-veteran civil servants who might normally render a salute while in uniform.

I remember not saluting while not in uniform but now it appears that you can/should render a hand salute. Is this a new reg of the code?

It's actually been that way for a little while now... only the attention whores do it though.

Although I do give the old guys a pass. You know the ones that wear WWII and Vietnam hats.

I don't see anything about should in there. You certainly can do it, but I would feel really douchy doing so.

I thought all service members saluted the anthem. The general public is only supposed to cover their heart for the pledge of allegiance.

However, most people cover their heart for the anthem as well.

The National Anthem seems to be a moving target.

When I was in school (I'm old) you placed your hand over your heart for the Pledge but not the Anthem.

If I see someone saluting in regular clothes then I assume they're doing it ironically and they're an a-hole.

That's what I was taught as well but I never do - it's also an attention whore move

While this may be the new acceptable standard I was taught that you only salute when in uniform.

I stand and cover my heart and face the flag. The only time I have deviated from that is during the veterans recognition game in Tiger Stadium (week of Veteran's Day) when the announcer requests veterans to salute.

Nuke as in the nerds that run the reactor.

ETA - all subs are nuclear powered now and all of them have the capability to carry nuclear warheads.

I ordered this patch for my range back last week and the lady sent me this. If she knew how little I actually did for my country she probably wouldn't have sent the note. And I felt like a dick after reading it
