So, Verizon just updated their logo from the one on the left to the image on the right:

That logo looks like they paid the slacker kid at art school and he forgot to turn it in so he made it on his phone on the way into the pitch meeting

I don't believe there is anything lazy about Google's new logo. Simplistic? Yes, but that suits them so well. We're talking about a company known for a blank white screen with a simple logo and single text box. Check out this page for more information regarding the new Google logo. It makes a lot of sense what they did and works incredibly well for them: LINK

Simple logos with helvitica type fonts have been proven to be easier on the eye.
