Hey OT

I posted on this board a couple weeks ago regarding things to do in Rome. My 2 friends and I are traveling there after we graduate in May.

My group really wants to get a great tour of St. Peter's Basilica, the Sistine Chapel, and the Vatican City as a whole. One person suggested we book the Scavi Tour which brings group down to see the Tomb of St. Peter. Unfortunately, I've contacted the tour guide and they are already booked up during the time we are there.

Does the OT Board have suggestions/recommendations of tour companies for the Vatican City?

Thanks in Advance!!

Take proper precautions when you are bringing your gun on the plane.

I'd check the airline regulations and what the laws are regarding having your gun in Vatican City.

I brought my gun into St Peters no problem. A LA CCL carries over to Vatican City.

Gray Line is international...I'd be shocked if they didnt have them.

My memory of Vatican City/St. Peter's is and will always be "Jesus on sale" and the story of Jesus at the Temple

I'm going to Italy at the end of the summer and have been told several times to buy tickets for the Vatican ahead of time. Don't expect to just show up and get in.

The wife and I had a private tour. Just us and the tour guide. It was awesome. Asked a million questions, focused on what we were interested in, etc etc. I would recommend looking up a private tour

The best thing about the Sistine Chapel is all the sweaty Italians screaming Silencio! the whole time

A tour will hustle you. Go on your own and take your time. The Sistine Chapel cannot be truly appreciated with a simple walk through.

I'll find out and bump thread. eta- pay extra and get a private tour, it makes a huge difference and get them to take you to the Sistine Chapel first. We were there as soon as it opened and there were about 20 people max in there too. It sucks when it's packed

We were there last summer. It's fantastic. It's also a.whole.hell.ofa.lotta.touring. Ours was 5 hours, and you could easily be there a lot longer. The history is just mind blowing.

Remember to wear pants, or if you're a girl cover your shoulders and legs.

Rome might be loud and crowded, but damn if I don't love it.

I just got a tour from some random guide at the gates. It seemed thorough but a bit rushed.

Great! Please do! I've heard from a few places that a Private Tour was the way to go but wanted to gauge the Board's take

Is this new? I went in 1995 with a large group when I was in the Army. Didn't pay anything, our bus pulled into that huge courtyard area and we toured most of the Vatican.

You can't just walk in. You have to have a ticket. It's either for a guided tour or you get a ticket to walk a tour on your own.

Q. Do I actually need to book in advance, then?

Very much so, yes. Availability, both for straightforward tickets and for tours is always, always limited. It is only possible to confirm reservation up to 60 days in advance of your visit, but we recommend you to book as far in advance as is possible - we'll put your order on 'back-order' and then try to fill it as soon as the 60 day limit is reached.
There is, of course, nothing to stop you arriving at the Vatican and joining a queue on the day. Be aware, though, that your wait for tickets may be a long and hot one - waits of several hours are far from uncommon.

FYI: Visiting the Vatican

quote:

Q. Dress code and security?

You'll need to be wearing clothes that do not leave your shoulders/arms or lower legs bare. No shorts, short trousers, short skirts, sleeveless shirts or bare shoulders. All visitors to the Vatican Museums will be required to pass through a metal-detector prior to being granted admittance. We have a blog post here that features the (updated in 2011) full Vatican list of regulations for visitors. Please note that baby strollers/buggies cannot be taken into the Basilica.

By all means get a private tour. We did it for all of the places we visited in Italy.

I did the tour and also went to Mid-Night mass when John Paul II was the pope. I done all of this through the USO when I was in the Navy. It was an awesome time. You'll enjoy it. Have fun and post pictures when you get back.
