Used cars with previous accident.

I'm in the market for a used car, and a few that I've had interest in show an accident on the Carfax report. What would your approach be? Get checked by a mechanic? Avoid completely?

Avoid unless it's something small like a dent in the bumper cover.

Man, there are so many vehicles out there, I wouldn't even touch one with a bad carfax report

Agree with that. I would avoid unless you are a mechanic and get a hell of a deal.

Don't do it. It'll never be right. Learned the hard way.

This. I have a friend that is a hell of a collision specialist. Several friends have gone to auction with him and purchased 6-12 month old vehicles with pretty good damage for rock bottom prices. He fixes them and makes a little cut.
None have had problems that I know of, but I'm still really reluctant.

I disagree with it never being right, but you have to know who did the work. My friend's dad is a auto body repair guy, and they have gotten some great deals buying wrecked cars and fixing them up. The last one was an SRT Charger that they had $12,000 in and sold for $24,000. You'd never know it was wrecked by the way it drove and looked.
This of course is the exception and not the rule. I wouldn't buy a repaired vehicle if I didn't know who did the work and exactly what they did.

Another side note. Not everything gets reported to Carfax. I personally know someone who severely wrecked their car, had it repaired, and still has a clean report. I wouldn't trust many used vehicles that you don't test drive and have checked out by your own mechanic.
Just my two cents!

It depends. My wife clipped a curb and gouged the rims. Because it was a BMW and rims are so damn expensive, we claimed it on insurance. Now it shows up on carfax as an accident.

Same, I looked for a couple months until I found one coming off a short corporate lease. My inspection guy said it was flawless, and he supposedly totally fails at least 1/4 that he looks at.
Just be patient if you can.

How long did it take for her to mess up the new set?

We had the car 2 months before she curbed it. It was about another 2 before she nicked them again. The tires are just too damn big. If I could do it over again, I just would have gotten an accord. After about 6 months, the novelty wears off and it's just transportation.

My wife took a little longer to nick one of her's, about 8 months. I can't say too much about it though, I put a door ding in her car about a month after we bought it on a particularly windy day.
I decided I'd rather not even waste my time replacing it just for it to get messed up again, so I sanded down the edges so they wouldn't mess up my wash mitts, and you can barely tell now.

Depends on the nature of the accident. If it's a pickup truck that's had a bumper replaced then it's fine. If it's minor paint work or a bumper cover I wouldn't worry about it.
If body panels and mechanical parts have been replaced, it might have been a more serious accident.
My truck was never in an accident, but because it was vandalized and required paint work, it might show on the truck's history. It's unlikely to matter to anyone who buys it because by the time I sell it, it will have 200,000+ miles and be close to fully depreciated. I actually have some rock chips on the hood that may require some paint now.

Carfax isn't super descriptive of the damage. They mostly just give the location..ie. "Accident involving rear impact."

FWIW, if you're that devoted to the vehicle, Carfax will work with you to try and get additional info. I've done it a few times, their customer service is actually pretty responsive. I don't know how much more info you could get on an accident, but if it is confusing, send them an email.

If it had any frame damage avoid completely. I believe that shows on the Carfax.
I would also avoid water damage, if the Carfax reports that.
Minor damage is no big deal. Just pay less and expect to get less for it when it comes time to get rid of it.

Absolutely avoid completely, unless you are 100% sure it was a very minor accident.
Keep in mind, Carfax is notoriously unreliable.
Plus, when you get ready to resell, you'll have to explain the situation.
Nobody wants a "story" car.

Yeah, my wife was backing out of a spot at the mall ('cause women be shopping) and hit another car with her front bumper. It is a Toyota Sienna, so of course the bumper is made like a rubbermaid container. All smashed in on the corner. We got a new cover for it. That was the only damage, but I'm sure it got reported to CarFax. Oh well. Cars get hit all the time, and the majority of them are small damage like that, cosmetic only. We drove it about a month before we got it fixed.
