recent competition hosted in part by the U.S. Army and designed to test core tank crew skills saw European crews take the top honors, while crews from the U.S. Army failed to place. The results raise the question of whether the Army—after more than a decade of focusing on guerrilla warfare—has devoted adequate training to address "big war" skills.

quote:

A German tank crew from Mountain Panzer Battalion 7, Panzer Brigade 12 took top honors, followed by a Danish crew from their country's 1st Tank Battalion in second. Third place went to a Polish crew from the 34th Armored Cavalry brigade. It's unknown where the American crews placed, only that they weren't in the top three.

Winning tank crew

Germans

I know a certain poster is gonna be upset about this.

It's tough to compete with those Eastern Europeans once you get to the swimsuit competition.

One of the very few times on the OT where the "Thanks Obama" meme actually applies.

Our top notch tank guys were probably doing active tank duties and not goofy participation trophy drills.

Or we are dumb as frick.

Yeah, tanks are useless against the likes of ISIS and Al Qaeda, at least as long as you can't go scorched earth. I'm not surprised by this.

I'm retired now but I was a 19K tanker for over 20 years. We used to do a lot 9f competitions at Graf back in the day. The Germans were the only real competition but we were always better. Oh how times have changed.

Yeah, something tells me in real life, we won't be quite so helpless.

Not sure if this has been mentioned yet,but our crew had to train on the German tank (not the M1) for this competition.

That seems like an important detail.

quote:

Both Denmark and Poland brought Leopard 2A5 tanks, slightly older models but ones with largely with the same capabilities as the -A6. Italy brought a platoon of home-grown Ariete tanks. Slovenia brought M84 tanks, a copy of the Russian T-72 manufactured by Yugoslavia before the country's civil war. The United States brought its M1A2 Abrams tanks.
