U.S. consumers still resist the notion of self-driving cars, according to a University of Michigan study released on Monday, the latest sign that investors and automakers may be rushing into a business where demand is limited at best.
General Motors Co's recent acquisition of Silicon Valley startup Cruise Automation for a reported $1 billion has accelerated a stampede by other automakers, suppliers and venture capital firms looking to invest in or acquire new companies developing self-driving technology.
Consumers, meanwhile, remain concerned about aspects of self-driving technology and "overwhelmingly" still want the ability to manually control a self-driving vehicle, the study said. "The most frequent preference for vehicle automation continues to be for no self-driving capability," said the study's authors, Brandon Schoettle and Michael Sivak.

I don't mind driving. But, I HATE traffic. Driving 75 down I-10 is no problem. I don't mind doing that at all. But, I would love a car that can inch along the interstate during rush hour while I type reports, watch TV, and of course post on TD.

I'm more concerned with frickers like this slamming into me while they check Facebook...but maybe my priorities are askew...

This is a freight train coming. You're either onboard or you're a grit in the gears.

Only because most consumers really don't know how the driving experience would change, specifically. Give it time.
I enjoy driving, but it wouldn't be bad to, say, do some reading on my commute.

With self driving cars, traffic should be a thing of the past. Traffic is caused by people driving at differing speeds, accidents, tailgaiting, rubbernecking, etc.
I'm all for automated cars, I think they are way safer than the average driver (as the average driver is distracted by just about everything these days). It's economical because you don't waste as much gas being so inefficient in traffic, there's tons of benefits. The cons that I can think of is just people unwilling to let go of driving and people not trusting in the technology.

FU Prairieville retards.

Too much money in auto insurance to let this fly.

It's a trust issue which may become less of one over time.
It's the same reason why some people are scared to fly. There's no sense of control and you're putting your life in the hands of somebody you can't even see, much less know.
Even though most people are idiots, it doesn't change the fact that most people trust themselves over anybody or anything else.

You do realize that where we're going with these driver-less cars...there will be "no" traffic because stupid speeders won't mess up the flow of traffic?

Please provide one reason why automated cars are a bad thing. They would help reduce traffic issues, make roads much safer, reduce and eventually eliminate traffic lights, reduce and eventually eliminate auto related deaths, be much more fuel efficient, provide the opportunity to spend quality time with friends/family, potentially open the window to allow you to safely drink and/or text and/or sleep and/or do whatever the frick you want while being transported. Other than cities and governments losing traffic ticket/DWI revenue I don't really see any downside to this.

so classic cars are banished in this world? or would you have to get them converted?

Funded by the legacy car companies who's model is about to be obsolete. GM and Ford will not exist in 20 years, because they're behind this thing, instead of in front of it.

There was probably a lot of money in picking up horse shite too. Insurance companies are pretty smart and I'm sure they can adjust, let's not slow down progress for fear of their profits.

As the article notes, GM has invested $1 billion in acquiring a driverless technology startup.
