The new birth rate numbers are out, and they're a disaster. There are now only 59.6 births per 1,000 women, the lowest rate ever recorded in the United States.

The fewer young, productive people you have to pay for entitlements for old, unproductive people, the steeper the bill for the entire society becomes. This basic problem is strangling Europe's economies. And while the United States is among the least bad of the bunch, it is still headed in the wrong direction.

It's not if you want your social security to pay out. Need productive people to replace the ones going into retirement.

I would if I werent fairly certain the people who contribute negatively to society are probably having births at the same rate while the people who contribute positively to society are the ones with lower birth rates. This makes sense if you consider the proposed reason for lower birth rates. People who work hard and budget feel like they cant afford kids because of people who do nothing having kids and taking their $ through social programs.

I have a feeling if you broke this down by race two would be significantly higher than the rest.

This is why you don't create massive social retirement programs in the first place.

Let me out now and I'll happily forfeit everything I've already paid in.

Earths population will start diminishing mid century. overpopulation was feared in the 70's and the opposite is happening.

Tell thatbtonthebpeoplenin Africa who have 12-20 kids. Sure, 10 of them will die, but they'll be 8 of them who make it.

I highly doubt that social security will be paid out to myself once i am old enough to retire. It will be so restructured that it won't even resemble today's social security.

I'll be saving in other ways to secure my future rather than rely on social security.

Too many selfish people who would rather go to happy hours than guide next generation.

I still have foolish optimism that (1) Social Security may still be around when I'm 70 years old and (2) That I'll actually live that long.

Both are very unlikely. Saving my money just in case though.

what does "young" and "old" have to do with this? I see plenty of unproductive young people and plenty of productive old people.
