They've been renovating the building a good 1-2 months but the deal was officially announced today. Will be on the corner of Third & Convention.

Local developer, Wampold finalized agreements with Marriott in his plan to revitalize the old LNB Building downtown into a new 148-room Autograph hotel called Watermark Baton Rouge.

The Autograph brand is one of the newest and ritziest in the Marriott family of hotels, and Wampold says his hotel at 150 N. Third St. will be “upper upscale,” with high-end amenities, restored vintage artwork and a full-service restaurant. “This is going to be more upscale than the Renaissance,” says Wampold, referring to another Marriott hotel he owns on Bluebonnet Boulevard that opened in 2011. “This is going to be the most upscale hotel in Baton Rouge.”

While Renaissance is an upscale Marriott brand, Autograph is “upscale upscale” Wampold said. There are about 50 Autograph properties in the U.S., including The Saint Hotel in New Orleans’ Central Business District, the Algonquin Hotel Times Square in New York City, Hotel ICON in Houston and The Cosmopolitan of Las Vegas.

A Marriott Courtyard is also set to open in 2016 on the corner of Third & Florida. Will be developed by the same firm who built the downtown Hampton Inn across from IBM.

I try my hardest when traveling to stay at the Autograph Collection hotels. All the benefits of Marriott's but much smaller, boutique, and local flare/design.

This is awesome news for Downtown.

Maybe they can install a second lane for I-10 EB coming off the Mississippi River Bridge.

That'd be newsworthy.

That could be risky. The new Holiday Inn by the courthouse looks poised to clean up.

Yeah they're awesome. My parents stayed at the Cosmopolitan for my 21st and it's amazing. From what I've looked up, Marriott prefers to use historic/older buildings for their Autograph Collection to accentuate the local motif/culture of the area.

Wampold did a great job with the Renaissance, I'm sure this will be even better.

That hotel only has like 55 rooms.

Autograph is going to be competing with the Hilton and Indigo (somewhat) for the type of client to stay downtown.

Why?

Seriously. I live in BR and want it to have economic growth, but I cannot fathom how the frick this city needs as much hotel space as it has downtown.

It's barely 1,000 rooms. That's nothing.

When LED, DDD, etc try and persuade prospective companies to downtown Baton Rouge, these executives/expansion committees want existing nearby hotels for visiting clients, downtown living options, nearby services (food, entertainment, grocery, pharmacy, etc) for not only their employees but for their clients too. It's nearly impossible to convince companies to relocate to a city without an existing infrastructure.

Some Examples:
1) IBM alone is creating 800+ jobs downtown, they will have hundreds of visitors in/out of BR weekly. We saw that Hampton Inn pop up right beside IBM, that's not just a coincidence.
2) Abermarle, headquartered downtown just completed a $6.2 Billion acquisition/merger with their main competitor.
3) God only knows how many visitors/researchers the Water Campus will bring to BR.
4) Baton Rouge also hosts numerous events - how about Miss USA, we're hosting the pageant once again, these visitors want nearby hotels.

I can tell you, DDD is doing things right. It takes time. Build it & they [companies] will come

Good for downtown. They have been adding a lot of hotel rooms in that area. IBM and their partners will be creating a lot of demand for hotels in downtown and flights out of BTR.

I have status with the Marriott brands but I've never stayed in an Autograph before. I usually get into a Courtyard property about 3 nights a week. I'm glad that new Courtyard is going downtown as well for the business travelers.

If I'm not mistaken, Autograph is one of their more elite brands.

I suppose this means that Hyatt will be announcing a new build in the city somewhere.

They are nice. Pride themselves on being "independent" and top notch customer service.

I've stayed at about 6 or 7 Autograph properties across the country and have had one poor experience that the GM went well-above what was required to make me whole.

hotels downtown gotta be making a killing in just football season alone. With new companies opening up downtown, BR will need more hotels to accomodate everyone.

I agree but one thing Hampton Inn was complete before IBM started and was on the drawing board long before anyone knew about IBM.

But that developer is doing the other Marriott, that Wampold was trying to get, so it shows his confidence. And it is still just around 1000 rooms. I believe more will be built in the next few years. I'm a downtown fan.

Is this the same building where that female lawyer got murdered inside her office like 3 or 4 years ago? I think her estranged husband got arrested for it.
