I do not have the uninsured motorist coverage.

It was my understanding that if I was injured, my medical insurance would cover the cost of hospital, etc. But I think the medical insurance companies are starting to look closer at their claims.

And I have liability in case anyone in my vehicle is harmed by another driver.

But, I am wondering if I should add it to my policy.

Thoughts?

People here will swear you need it

I haven't hear a good enough reason to add it to my policy

I've never had it. If you have collision and are hit by a HRC supporter, you simply pay the deductible on your policy and get your vehicle repaired.

Health ins will cover medical, but UM can also cover lost wages and pain/suffering as well as the medical. There is a second UM coverage that covers bills only (economic loss only I believe is what it is referred to).

I've only seen a handful of people who carry high UM limits actually need it. However, i will not go without it.

I used to think this way until I got into a wreck last month. It's worth it especially in Louisiana where we have many uninsured or under-insured motorists.

I don't have it either, but it is a good idea in Louisiana considering all of the idiots without auto insurance in this state.

I've had to use it twice... Was hit by 2 under insured motorist .. It's not overly expensive to add either.

Uninsured driver rates i believe are around 13% of motorist on road in Louisiana.. Underinsured however far exceeds that.

Better have it in the Hispanic dominant areas of Texas

Med pay coverage is usually $1000 or $5000, so if your bills are in excess of that, UM would cover them.

ETA They'd be paid at 100% so you wouldn't have a copay or have to pay out of pocket of your health ins deductible would be high.

You ONLY need it if you do not carry collision insurance, if you have collision there is no need for it. If you have liability only then you BETTER have it.

I wouldn't go that far. For most fender benders, sure, but for a catastrophic injury, UM is a good thing to have.

Liability only covers people and/or other autos YOU damage. Your liability will not cover people in your car that someone else hurts.

You're talking about UM for the vehicle, I believe OP is talking about UMBI.

I learned a hard lesson years ago about uninsured/underinsured motorist.

I had a 20K underinsured policy.

Woman hit me. I needed to have extensive neck surgery. My back will be messed up for life.

After having to hire a lawyer to fight her insurance company I ended up getting a little over 12K. Did nothing. Without the underinsured motorist coverage I would have gotten about 3500.

I have medications that I will have to take for the rest of my life. My medical insurance covers part but out of pocket is 60/month. Between the injections occasionally and the doctors yearly, I have an out of pocket of 2500 before medical insurance covers the rest. Not to mention having to wear a tens unit occasionally to deal with the pain. It is a major discomfort.

The minor cost per year for the coverage is worth it. If I would have had any passengers with me the money that I received would have been split between me and any other injured parties.

If you're driving in LA, you absolutely should have it along with med pay. And it's cheap. Too lazy too debate the point but for the price it's worth every penny. Just hope you don't need it , just like disability etc

having UM coverage on a company truck when i was injured by a hit and run driver changed my life. after my first surgery the following day, i called my personal insurance agent, upped my limits and added UM. 33 years later, i still have loss of range of motion in my elbow and my ankle hurts constantly, but the cash in the bank still makes it feel better.

What Fred said. But UM for bodily injury and not the Economic only crap.

Health insurance does not pay for lost wages or pain and suffering.
