....because they claim Berkeley is violating the ADA by not providing captions.

UC Berkeley has long been committed to ensuring equal access to students, faculty and staff with disabilities. Despite the absence of clear regulatory guidance, we have attempted to maximize the accessibility of free, online content that we have made available to the public. Nevertheless, the Department of Justice has recently asserted that the University is in violation of the Americans with Disabilities Act because, in its view, not all of the free course and lecture content UC Berkeley makes available on certain online platforms is fully accessible to individuals with hearing, visual or manual disabilities.
quote:
In many cases the requirements proposed by the department would require the university to implement extremely expensive measures to continue to make these resources available to the public for free. We believe that in a time of substantial budget deficits and shrinking state financial support, our first obligation is to use our limited resources to support our enrolled students. Therefore, we must strongly consider the unenviable option of whether to remove content from public access.

In what way is this good?

It's the opposite of "good".
One can only hope the same nonsense doesn't threaten MIT as well.

Because I have a hearing disability and this triggers the frick out of me. I want them to suffer and give a public apology. Then, I want the Huffington Post to publish an article stating UC's policies causes severe physical and emotional damage to people with disabilities.

I'm guessing Berkeley's online education has the same indoctrination as their campus education, so I'll go with good too.

On a scale from 0 to LucasP, I give this a -1.

This smacks of, "the higher education lobby supports Democrats both financially through their liberal professors and ideologically through how they teach students, and we want to protect them, so we will sue out of existence any online education platform that may cause the higher education lobby to experience a financial loss."
It would be like if you wanted to protect the horse and buggy lobby from cars by banning the internal combustion engine.

I mean, do you really have a problem taking some online courses about statistics, analytics, and coding from a world class university online for free? Really?

ADA is a disaster of legislation. Penn and Teller did an entire episode on it, and when that show was made (~2008?) less disabled people were gainfully employed than before.

I love those MIT courses. It's one of the driving forces for me to finally get the CPA out of the way so I can start on those again.

Anyone who thinks this is a good idea should be shot on the spot, no ceremony, trial, or other delay. Just take them out of the gene pool immediately.

It's not like this hurts Berkeley. In a worst case scenario, they simply shrug, say "Two tears in a bucket, frick it" and shut it down.

In fairness, you can probably count on two hands the members of the OT that do this. And you won't be thinking, "shite, I'm running out of fingers"
