TV remote thiefs

About a month ago I lost my original TV remote.
Long story short, I lost the replacement universal remote a couple days ago.
So the question is.. Are TV remote thiefs real or just a myth?
Or is this maybe just a common ghost problem?

As much as I like the AppleTV, whoever the hell designed that tiny thing needs to die. The only reason I ever get to watch it is because of the remote app on my phone.
