Turbo tax question
Posted by ellishughtiger on 3/14/16 at 12:45 pm02
Rather then paying an accountant I'm doing my own taxes this year. If I use turbo tax should I use the free software or pay the extra $35 for the "maximize my deductions".
I worked half the year out of state so I have a lot travel expenses ( gas, airfare, lodging, rental car ect.) and food expenses to report.

IF you itemize, you can't use the free version.

You will pay it to file at the end regardless. I pay around $60 to do and file my State and Fed. It is worth it. Good program.

I would do the $35 if you have a bunch of extra things to add, I do it and it typically runs quick and smooth for me.
However some kent on here will tell you to do the free one just because it's free.
Edit: What Artie said ^

Do you stand to make more than $35 by doing a full return? if so, pay it and rake in the money

I've never paid them a penny and use them evevy year. Only 1 W-2 and no crazy deductions though.

First couple of years I loved using it
Last year when they changed format, I don't find it as user friendly but well worth the money you spend on it and to file.

I use the free Federal TurboTax, but you have to pay for one state return. I have pretty complicated finances, 1099s, royalties, etc and it works fine for me. If you have two state returns to file, you may need to opt for the more expensive version.

Mine was free to file and I used the free version.

I'll have to report state taxes in Louisiana, North Carolina and South Carolina. I'm a permanent resident of Louisiana though.

Sweet. I found the paid version worked well for me and I'm not worried about the small fee.

Yeah you'll possibly owe in multiple states then. If you've got a bunch of investments too, I'd let a CPA handle it...but that's just IMO.
