do you turn off the AC in your vehicle so that it is off when you crank it up? Is that better for the life of the fan and compressor?

I never have, and I have never really had issues with it.

I usually don't, but every once in a while, I get a funky smell in my truck when I first turn the truck on and the A/C is on. I have found that if I turn the fan off and set it to fresh air it helps. Perhaps it's all in my mind, but I'm ok with it.

you may have a small leak in the evaporator coil.

Your compressor will last longer if you keep it off on start up.

On anything newer than around 2002 it doesn't matter, because even if the switch on the dash is "ON" the compressor won't actually turn on until conditions are correct and the car's ECM commands it on.

As for the blower fan , turning off the ac doesn't affect blower fan operation.

Is your floorboard ever slightly damp? Sounds to me like you have at least a partially clogged condensation tube so that condensed water is getting into the cab of the truck where you can smell it instead of flowing out from under the vehicle.

Feel around down there, if it's damp, but not sticky, you have a clogged tube, if it's slightly sticky you possibly have a heater core leak, or even more remote possibility an a/c evaporator leak.

Even though he is a hogs fan, all of this is correct.

Older car you can consider such things. These new models are very efficient and I've never heard of anyone needing to replace a compressor.
