There are a few country gas stations/roadside restaurants near where I hunt that, if I was black, I would avoid like the plague. There's usually some good ole baws in there wearing camo, telling lies, eating BBQ, and usually strapped up tighter than a fresh marine recruit on their first deployment. And half of them are doing more drinking than hunting.

Vidor Texas had a few of these late as the 90s that were not welcoming to blacks. Was funny to be on a road trip with a black teammate and I'd go in an pay for gas as he pumped. The looks I got made me chuckle. I could read their minds, 'What's that Big ole skinhead white boy ridin with that colored dude for?'

Well that explains a lot. I'm guessing our man was buying some dope - not just cigarettes. That is about the only reason I could see for him stopping at that shithole.

We stopped at an exit that had several food options close by. Some guys went to grab waffle house and they absolutely would not serve our 2 black teammates.

Wow. His girlfriend and her family really applaud you and that guy's line of thinking. Way to show the bad guys how it's done. Live to fight another day when you have a girlfriend, kids, etc. You wanna stand up to them when it's you and a buddy, THEN is the time. Not in this case for sure. He should have walked straight to the car and got the hell out of there.

eta:There are some backward arse places on Sand Mountain which is on the way to Huntsville.It wouldn't shock me if that happened.

I get it.
I'm most definitely a pussy. And based on my experience with this(once in 96 in Tigerland parking lot as my girlfriend and I passed some 3rd string football players and another time with first wife in Dallas in similar gas station scenario), the guys were actively trying to goad a lone white dude into standing up for his girl and getting his arse whooped. I didn't fall for it at 21 nor 31 years old.

The way the article reads to me this is his side of the story. I doubt he is going to talk about the possible drug deal gone bad. Maybe I'm just assuming too much here but seems like this could be the case.

The white guy says, calmly, "I'm looking at you n$@@/r. Well. I thought shite was about to hit the fan. Black guy pumps his gas (didn't take long) gets in his car and drives off.
