Travelling to developing countries.. thoughts?

Was talking with my mom this morning and her firm is expanding their international presence and wanted to know if she would be willing to travel for a week or two at a time to places in Africa (Kenya, Uganda) and India. She was asking my opinion and I thought what better place to get rational feedback than the OT Lounge!
She is no stranger to third world travel having worked in Nepal (late 90s pre Maoist insurgency) Mali (early 00s prior to the dirka dirkas getting fiesty) and Azerbaijan in the mid 00s. I consider her pretty cultured and that she knows how to carry herself in a foreign country.
My own thoughts were:
India- not that bad despite the press, stay where expats stay and hire a driver. If they sent her to like Bihar or Punjab I might tell her to think twice
Kenya- This is the one I'm most skeptical about, if its in Nairobi then maybe, as she can stay at a quality expat hotel and generally stay around a safer environment... countryside, no way.
Uganda - I am most ok with this one. As long as you aren't gay its pretty damn safe and recovered from genocide/war.
What say the OT

Has she checked the most recent State Department travel advisories? Might be a good place to start.
I agree with your initial assessment. Now is not a great time to go to Kenya.

What kind of business is she in that she want to expand to these shite countries?

Nairobi is probably the most dangerous place in Kenya other than the northern sliver that borders Somalia.

Finance, my coworker just got back from a 3 days in Nairobi said he didn't notice any issues but then again he barely left the airport.

India would be my biggest concern. Females there are not even human.
Kenya would not bother me at all in the urban areas. Tons of English and European types have been there for decades.

This.
Don't go to any country where there are travel advisories.
Any 3rd world country will be a culture shock.
Go to Australia, China, Thailand. Basically 1st and 2nd world countries.

Not sure I agree with this, I think it has a lot more to do with their caste system. The Dalits really are treated as less than human. In the larger cities, provided you aren't looking for trouble/in slums you are generally fine. But in the countryside watch out. I wouldn't venture over there under any circumstance.

If she's going through her company, they should be setting her up with something secure and safe... It's their arse on the line if something goes wrong.
I've been to more than my fair share of developing countries the last few years and have found that expats who stay in the upscale areas, or know how to keep their wits about them usually face no problems. It also sounds like she's well-traveled and knows how to handle herself as you say. I don't think you have anything to worry about.

This. I've been to India twice in the last 8 months for work. India is fine, so long as she's in the big cities and staying out of the slums.

All three have risks - particularly in India and Kenya. India is all rapey lately with foreign women and Kenya is a hotbed with the terrorists/geopolitical issues they currently find themselves in.
If she's staying within the confines of her work and the hotel and isn't going into the jungle solo kinda thing, she should go. Safe travels to her

I went to the Philippines for 2 weeks, travel advisories and all. I felt safer in Manila than I do in NOLA.

Kenya: Stay away from Nairobi, the coastal areas (esp Mombassa), anywhere near Somalia. The rural areas are much safer, especially in the west.
Uganda: Kampala doesn't strike me as dangerous, but it is a pretty miserable city. Other than that, anything in the southern half of the country is nice. Both Uganda and esp Kenya are beautiful places geographically.

Al Shabab is killing anyone who's a kaffir.
They also were responsible for the massacre at that mall (WestFields?) in Kenya.

I've worked in 26 foreign countries, most of them we would consider "third world", and have had no trouble in any of them.
